Product Description

'we [Westminster Chapel] have been using it [the NIV] for about fifteen years, and we are extremely happy that it is part of our regular ministry.' (Dr R. T. KENDALL )

'I am frequently asked to read a lesson during a church service, and the NIV seems almost invariably to be the version to be used. Its strength, clarity and dignity strike me each time I read aloud.' (SIR CLIFF RICHARD, OBE )

'Over the past 21 years the NIV has established itself as one of the most widely used and appreciated modern versions of the Bible. The quality of its translation richly deserves this wide recognition and I hope that it will continue to be of equal benefit to many more people in the years to come.' (The Most Revd and Right Honourable The Lord Archbi )

5.0 out of 5 stars New International Edition Holy Bible 14 May 2009
So much easier to read than a normal Bible and I would recommend it to everyone who has just become a Christian for better understanding of the Bible.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the binding that is claimed 13 Dec 2007
By Baruch
Format:Leather Bound|Verified Purchase
The NIV needs no commendation here, the difficulty buyers face is to choose the right page size, binding, etc. Their problem is made worse by amazon's jumble of reviews, placing reviews for audio book bibles as if they were reviews of print bibles, and so on. It's also made worse by completely false descriptions of bindings. This is the "NIV Popular Bible: New International Version (Leather Bound)", for just over 18. It isn't. It isn't even 'bonded leather', the part-synthetic leather substitute made out of leather fibres that have been compressed together with adhesives and synthetic compounds to create a 'sort of' leather. For the price, I assumed that 'bonded leather' would be what I'd get; bonded leather isn't real leather, but in this day and age, nobody really expects complete honesty, and bonded leather would have been ok. If you enlarge the product image, sometimes, as here, you'll see the binding described, but not always. This bible's product image shows that Hodder describe the binding as 'Leather Style', that is to say, completely synthetic. I made the mistake of not zooming the product image to check this. I simply didn't believe that amazon would so brazenly and completely misrepresent the binding right in the primary product title. You live and learn, I guess. Amazon's only defence is that the marketing of bibles is now almost entirely about added value in the binding, etc, and that the entire market has adopted deliberately misleading terminology. Booksellers neither know nor care what they're actually selling. Buyer beware

2.0 out of 5 stars The Gold Standard in Mediocrity 26 Jan 2009
Good points: It flows well and so is easy to read, especially to an audience.
Bad points: Like most modern bibles the New Testament is based on the now fatally flawed Greek text of Nestle Aland/United Bible Societies. As a consequence many valid passages are reduced to footnotes eg "some authorities insert here ----" Which makes it very hard going if you want an accurate reading for study. Like most modern versions many passages affecting Christian doctrine are left out or reduced to footnotes. If you want accuracy and easy reading then you would be better off with the New King James Bible. If you want to know what an obscure passage means, then you would be better off with the New Living Bible (2nd Edition).
