First sample returned as the disk access LED did not work (it only works with the USB connection BTW) and was quickly replaced by Amazon.

The unit is well made and functions as intended. I use the eSATA connection which operates at the native speed of the drive, rather than the significantly slower USB connection.

The power switch is at the rear and can be a bit fiddly. It is important to use this to power down the drive before ejecting it from the docking station. An alternative would be to issue a spin down command from suitable software on the PC (a pity Windows doesn't do this when you issue an eject removable media command!)

The only other thing to be wary of is that the disk drive will become warm or even hot after an hour or so as there is no forced cooling, so probably a good idea to configure power saving on the PC to turn off unused drives after an hour.

The instructions are useless and the leads are too short! but otherwise this is a very useful device.

I bought the NEWlink USB 2.0 /eSATA Docking Station for SATA HDDs product because I was disillusioned with previous external HDD caddies for my SATA drives - I was tired of waiting considerable amounts of time for files to transfer between hard drives . I then took the plunge into enabling esata both on my pc and on my laptop(by using a pcmcia e-sata card on there) and I can only say , WOW , this kit is what I had been waiting for all along . It's small , cheap , has both usb 2 and e-sata ports on the back and acts as a USB 2 hub with 4 ports on the front too - the HDD hot swapping is a godsend . It is definately worth the money. my need for speed and thirst for cheap have been quenched !!!
Great product at a phenomenal price !!!

Just for information 1 April 2010
By Jim
I have just installed this caddy on a machine which usually very flaky (Dell Precision M4400 running XP64 but intended by dell to run Vista originally), but it is formatting OK as an e-sata device as I write.
So that's a thumbs up for the Newlink.
The reason I'm writing this now is because of the stick it is getting in other reviews for short cables. Now, USB2 aside, e-sata is *supposed* to have short cables. It was designed that way to get the sata data rate, but outside the box.

Why 1Tb HD Limit
Why does this device state a 1TB Hard Drive limit? - I can't see the HD size is relevent to the way this device works??? I want to use it with a WD 2TB drive.

Best value for money single drive external docking station I've used
Good build quality, without the "drive wobble" that I've had using other external caddies. I especially like the locking switch which prevents accidental removal. Read more

Not working
Is not being detected as a hub and therefore is useless. Can't speak for them all but I would look around and read up before purchasing.

Does its job
This docking station does exactly what it says on the box, faultlessly. However the build quality is nothing remarkable considering it is expensive compared to others. Read more

Spot on!
Brilliant bit of kit, Simple and effective. I have not got the e-sata to work, but I think this is a mobo issue not the Docking station
