5.0 out of 5 stars Spanish Grammar Bible 19 Aug 2003
I was fortunate enough to be taught by John Butt at King's College London and he was one of the most inspirational tutors I've ever had. He made me understand how exciting languages are. I used this book as my Bible throughout University and beyond. I am now training to be a Spanish teacher myself and will recommend it to all future students. As has been said in previous reviews, it may be daunting for beginners, but for intermediate and above, it explains just as clearly the basic ideas as the complexities of the Spanish language. Things you never thought you'd grasp will come easy to you after reading this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable 22 Nov 2009
I have been teaching Spanish for many years. I find this book to be an indispensable resource for students and teachers. Explanations of grammatical points are very clear, and the book is very comprehensive in its discussion of exceptions, shades of meaning, etc.

English-speaking students will find the index very useful since it lists most of the grammatical topics one can think of. It is also very helpful that throughout the book all the examples in Spanish are translated into English, which allows the reader to contrast grammar in the two languages. At the beginning, the book may be a little daunting because of how comprehensive it is. However, even intermediate-level students will find it useful if they focus on the main points, and it's a reference book that they will be able to use forever as they progress through various stages of their Spanish learning. It's worth the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but not for beginners 26 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This book is incredibly detailed and thorough! However, because of this, it is not recommended for beginners who find out dishearteningly, that there are numerous exceptions to every rule. It's a great book but I'd recommend starting out with something a little simpler and progressing at the intermediate stage to this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best Spanish grammer book ever 20 Nov 1999
Perhaps this book is a bit too detailed for beginners in Spanish, it covers a lot of ground in a lot of detail. But for the serious student of Spanish Grammar this is the best book ever. At first reading it can seem a little daunting but if its answers you're after this is the book for you. I have a house full of Spanish language aids but I might as well throw them all away, this book is all I need. If you want to crack the problems of Spanish grammar buy this book - but be warned it does require a bit of effort. A classic of its genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very detailed, but not for most beginners 5 Dec 2006
This is, undoubtedly, -the- grammar reference for those learning Spanish. It has a high level of detail that will appeal to those with a working knowledge of the language, but may be intimidating to someone new to Spanish.

The text is liberally interspersed with examples, and is very clear - particularly with the glossary at the back, which contains explanations of various grammatical terms that are used.

I would consider this book to be a 'must-have' for anyone wanting to get a firmer grasp of Spanish grammar.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not called 'The Big Butt' for nothing! 20 Sep 2001
This has to be the definitive grammar for any serious student of Spanish today, covering both Peninsular and world Spanish. All aspects of modern Spanish grammar and usage are covered in detail, illustrated by an abundance of skillfully selected quotes from the major writers of Spanish literature, past and present, from Spain and from Hispanoamerica. An essential companion, always at my elbow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spanish Grammar 25 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is exactly what i was looking for. It's not an easy read but it does seem to contain everything and a bit more besides. To make sure I've got the point I do the exercises in Pountain's work book. I consider 8 out of 10 as mastery but perhaps my standards are low.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece 9 May 2004
By A Customer
I've read dozens of grammar books in dozens of languages, and this is finest of them all by far. The examples, the asides, the footnotes, the compreheniveness, the richness and the range of this book, show that the authors are sensitive, widely-read, creative and dedicated to doing an excellent job. Not for beginners.
