I'm kind of surprised you can pick this up at the time of writing for less than £30.

This edition is quite wonderful and gets pretty much everything right. The hardcase is sturdy and well presented as are the two hardback books, the paper is nice and thick, there's a nice poster in there, folded 4 ways, so would probably need to be framed to look decent, but nicely done. There's a colour section at the beginning of each book with the colour covers as well as maps and diagrams of the forest.

The books themselves are in the Japaneses format, reading from 'back to front' this means the art and the original lettering (where possible) and sound effects are not transposed. What you are seeing, English language text aside, is what the author intended. There is even a glossary of sound effects if you really want to immerse youself. In short, they get absolutely every detail right.

The story itself is incredible, it starts the same as the anime of the same name, but quite quickly takes on a life of its own. This is not a childrens story, this is a fable about man's treatment of the environment and the nature of good and evil. The characters live and breath in this world, each with their own motivation and personaility. Nausicaa navigates this world, doubting herself, her values and her ability to cope, sometimes overwhelmed and relying on the strength of others, I don't think I've seen a character quite like her before and her journey is an unpredictable and very entertaining read.

The artwork conveys the action well and illustrates the strange and alien world Nausicaa lives in with incredible detail. The world design and in particular the airships and air craft are delightful, there's something wonderfully retro as well as futurastic about them, as though they stepped out of a world like ours yet totally different.

So 5/5, no hesitation, this is a wonderful story that deserves to be told more often.

I saw the film of Nausicaa, Valley of the Wind a few years ago. Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli never fail to satisfy. Absolutely beautifully made film with a typical Miyazaki/Ghibli ecology story basis. And having bought this I can see why the movie was so good. Page after page of delightfully hand-drawn art. Some simple others complicated. If you liked the film don't read my review, just buy it.

So far I've only read the first book of volume one of the two volume set. But I really enjoyed it. I'm thinking I'll re-read book one again before starting book two. Daft I know but I don't know if I'm reading it too fast and not fully appreciating each panel. It took Miyazaki years to write and draw. (By the way, each volume is physically quite heavy so reading in bed is a tiddly bit awkward).

I've read a few English translations of manga in my time, but never any Miyazaki and so far I've never read one of this format either. I'll explain. Western books are written and read from left to right but Japanese comic books are written and read from right to left - so it appears you're beginning at the end. I believe the process of producing these books for our western eyes is called 'flopping'. So for me, reading right to left was quite strange.

The other odd thing for me - and yet really compelling were the 'sound' affects. They're written in Japanese onomatopoetic way - ie Choon and Krik look meaningless but translate as things like Boom and Crunch or whatever. Don't worry though, there is a picture by picture translation of these sounds at the back of each book - or is that the front?

I gave it 5 stars because it's simply a brilliantly produced collection of what so far is proving to be an incredible ecological sci-fi. Also this boxset is the closest way you'll get to reading a real Japanese comic book without learning their language. I'd strongly recommend this book to any fans of the film, manga fans in general, and also sci-fi fans.

I own the separate volumes too, but this box set is pure perfection. Two 2" thick hardcover volumes contain the whole story, and they fit rather snugly into a perfectly formed, hard outer case with one end open. The set also comes with a poster, though it is only one sided, it is 2xA4 size with a crease where folded. It is a bust profile watercolour poster of Nausicaa.

This is one of those very rare occasions where I get to act like a manga snob and say I read the manga first, but if you loved the animation, you will truly love this story. It is much longer, much more involved and very complex. One of my favourite manga of all time, in a beautiful, easily storable box set I will treasure forever. Because of the reprinting, it is now at an affordable price again.

If it ever sky rockets again, please buy the 7 separate volumes. Don't be strong armed into getting this set for a blown out of proportion price when it's the story you want. The single volumes are just as good for that. But if you can get the box set for or under £45 then go for it! It is worth that much, definitely. ^^

This is a stunning edition of a magnificent manga.

It is currently out of stock (march 2013) but have it on good authority from Viz that they are reprinting in April 2013- so for all of you who missed out - we are still in luck and don't need to buy the extortionate out of print costs that the book is currently going for , unless you really want a first printing edition.

This set is a true bargain. I have the content in the 7 volume paperback version too and whilst easier to read (weight) they don't have the same presentation quality.
This is really nicely put together and worthy of any collector. The story is much more extensive and detailed than the film so it's a must for anyone who has seen the latter and enjoyed it.
One deficit is that each of the paperback volumes has its own poster/map/etc in the cover whereas this set only has one poster. Other than that, get this!
