Product Description

George 'E.A.S.E' Evelyn, AKA Nightmares On Wax, has released a range of records over 25 years that have been integral to cultural movements and electronic music. This album comprises of the best of tracks from Nightmares On Wax 'By Day' and 'By Night' over the past 25 years, plus rarities and remixes.

George spent his youth b-boying his way around the streets of Leeds and Bradford as part of teenage breakdance crew the Solar City Rockers. After cutting some embryonic rave tracks with musical co-conspirator Kevin 'Boy Wonder' Harper, the duo signed to Warp and released debut 'A Word Of Science', becoming instrumental in the bleep explosion with tracks such as 'Dextrous' and 'Aftermath', which attained mythical status for a generation of clubbers. George continued as a solo artist, still under the Nightmares On Wax moniker, going on to produce definitive albums 'Smokers Delight' and 'Carboot Soul' - both of which helped shape the burgeoning downtempo hip hop scene. Numerous tracks such as 'Les Nuits' became widely regarded as chillout classics.

Later albums such as 'In A Space Outta Sound' continue to be staple afterparty favourites, with the track 'You Wish' in particular featuring on numerous compilations, mixtapes and club sets. The most recent album, 'Feelin Good', weaves a musical thread through a plethora of styles that N.O.W have explored of the years, including hip hop, jazz, soul and funk.

This CD is a double disc edition including a 12 page booklet.

George Evelyn a.k.a. DJ EASE, the main man in Nightmares On Wax, was there at Warp's bass and bleeps beginning (with some stonkers - "I'm For Real" and "Aftermath" - both included here), but after one album, he adapted his style into something far less techno, but no less ahead of its time. The classic sound of albums 2 and 3 ("Smokers Delight" and "Carboot Soul") set the N.O.W. template: a kind of Balearic, chilled out hip hop. Evelyn's idea (according to the publicity for this release) was to make a hip hop version of The KLF's "Chill Out" - one of his favourite records at the time. In doing so, he foresaw trip hop and even the Detroit "beatdown" sound by some distance. If ever somebody knew how to bottle sunshine then it is Mr Evelyn - check "You Wish", "Mind eye", Les Nuits" and "Morse" on CD1 (- subtitled "Nightmares By Day") by way of example. CD2, "Nightmares By Night", is a bit more of a mixed bag - starting off with some of the more skanking cuts from his later albums then, at track 12, making a sharp turn back into the classic early Warp techno of "Dextrous", "Aftermath" et al. This brutal change of style isn't a problem for the likes of me who have followed this artist from the beginning.

What IS a problem for me is the (mistaken? misjudged?) inclusion of the nostalgia piece "70s 80s". Don't get me wrong - it was a perfectly good record in its day - one of the poppiest N.O.W. ever put out and should've been a much bigger hit. It was even a single and you can see why the record company would want to feature it. But no, my difficulty is that track's chronologically unwitting (in more innocent days just cheeky/ironic) name-checking of "Jim'll Fix It". Now, the LAST person I want to be reminded of when I'm chilling out listening to this on my summer hols is himself.

Extremely good music, just what you would expect from this label. Added to my vast collection of their other material

Disappointment for In A Space Out Of Sound Fan 16 Oct. 2014
By Greg R. Kaczynski - Published on Amazon.com

Turns out I don't like a lot of Nightmares on Wax like I thought I did. I love love love In A Sapace Outta Sound... and I guess I expected all of their stuff to sound like that. Nope. Most of the tracks that I hadn't heard before are just kind of repetitive and uninspired.
Mediocre. 15 Sept. 2014

The earlier stuff was good, it was appropriate for the times, and listening to it again brought back some memories, but the later stuff really didn't do enough and are definitely eclipsed by so many other great groups out there, unfortunately, so the CD is just mediocre. Even the quality of the sounds are not so good, kinda muffled, and not very remastered or cleaned. The modern, clear, thump bass is missing.
