5.0 out of 5 stars Alive, exciting and accessible, 7 Feb 2004

This is an absolutely outstanding retelling of the Norse myths. Green weaves together the threads of the Eddas, Voluspa, Volsungasaga and the other key texts into something which is alive, exciting and accessible for enquiring minds.

'Myths of Norseman' was the gateway for me to wider learning. I first read this book when I was nine, and read it again every few months until I was fifteen. Five years later I chose to study Old Icelandic as part of my degree - a direct consequence of the influence of this book.

As with his other books, Green never compromises the original stories, so I never had to 'unlearn' things I had read in Myths of Norsemen. As a child, I appreciated being taken seriously by the author, and as an adult I valued the head start that this book gave me.

A few weeks ago, I bought it for my niece for Christmas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling Tales of Norse Gods., 4 Aug 2001
This book brings the Norse World back to life, with it's tales of gods such as Loki, Thor, Odin, Vali the avenger and much more. It starts with Yggdrasill the World Tree and ends with Ragnarok, the last battle. This is a very good book for anyone who likes legands of old.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction for all ages, 12 Oct 2006

Read when I was very young and recently acquired for my daughter. In no small part responsible for a lifelong interest in mythology. The key difference between this book & others I've read of a similar ilk is that the various tales are woven into a single, more or less chronological narrative. This is particuarly good for first timers since you don't have to know what you're looking for in advance, which is often the case in more encyclopeadic formats. Countless powerful images remain from 30 years ago : Thor's tests of strength, the flight of Loki, the binding of Fenris. Buy now.
