"Hayward illustrates that no rumor was too ridiculous, and no exaggeration too great." "--Eye Spy"

Product Description

The Second World War gave rise to a rich crop of legends, many of which persist in the public consciousness today. Some are well known, such as the escape of an undead Hitler to South America, Allied aircraft buzzed by 'Foo Fighters' and UFOs, German parachutists dressed as nuns, and a failed German invasion of Suffolk in 1940. Others are more subtle, such as the vaunted Dunkirk spirit, which portrayed the disaster of 1940 as a victory, and the conspiracy theories surrounding Rudolf Hess. Did he fly to Scotland to negotiate a peace treaty with memebers of the Royal Family? Was the aged prisoner who died in Spandau Prison a double? From tales of betrayal at Dieppe and Arnham to Hitler's obsession with the occult and Nazi U-boat bases in Ireland, James Hayward offers a refreshing and intriguing perspective on the myths, legends and folk memories of the Second World War.

Have you ever been round jumble sales on charity shops and bought those really eccentric books on WWII? The ones that discuss the occult or really weird theories about key figures. You know the ones I mean!

Well, so does the author of this book. He has read them and, through painstaking research and analysis, dismissed the majority as "preposterous". Amazing book.

Of course, it's not just about that, it's also about rumours and myths that were around in WWII at the time. He discusses so many that is is amazing to see the similarities between them, and how propaganda or the news-hungry public has created them.

The research for this book is phenomenal, the detail is incredible, I have learned masses not just about the myths but also the war itself.

But finally of course, if a book is detailed and well-researched, all this is pointless if it written badly. But this one is not. It is very accessible and easy to read. Read it when you are in bed and it won't send you to sleep!

Debunking the misconceptions, myths, and misunderstandings arising from conflicts 8 Jun 2006
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Myths And Legends Of The Second World War by James Hayward is an impressive collection of lore and lies, folk stories and propaganda generated misinformation drawn from every theatre of World War II. Debunking the misconceptions, myths, and misunderstandings arising from conflicts, Myths And Legends Of The Second World War addresses and corrects such "tall tale" stories as the "Foo Fighters" and UFOs, German Parachutists dressed as nuns, Hitler's escape to South America, German U-boat bases in Ireland, Herman Hess and the British Royals, a massacre that never took place, an invasion that never was, and other enduring myths. Offering a large print format for easy reading and enhanced with the inclusion of an extensive bibliography, Myths And Legends Of The Second World War is very highly recommended reading military buffs for its clarifications and explanations of World War II's most enduring but quite erroneous stories.
