Plus points:
- concise collection of greek and roman legend
- sociological explanation of these myths (the main attraction for me)
- family tree of legends

Minus points:
- predominance on latin names, even though all the myths are of greek origin
- doesn't present all versions of a myth in full, and the ones it presents are cleaned-up to victorian sensibilities

Overall, I'd say it's a useful addition to a litterati's library

The book gives a detailed insight into the characters of Rome & Greece mythology and goes on to develop their individual stories.

There are interesting references to contemporary poets and playwrights.

I ordered three copies of this book from three different sellers. I expected all three to be copies of the original blue-grey-cover print. What I received was two lavender-covered newer editions and only one original blue-grey version.

Although in the newer version the print itself is blacker and clearer and the paper whiter, the illustrations in the original are far superior and greatly to be prized.

I was not aware that there was another version and had wanted and still prefer the original.

I carry it everywhere I go 8 Feb. 2000
By Anna Harbaugh - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book features a selection of Roman and Greek myths, in addition to several short summaries of stories such as the Iliad, the Alliad, and the Oddesy. In addition, it contains many passages from such poets as Homer, Shakespeare, and several others of a more modern origin. Written in fine, if rather flowery script, this book portrays its myths just as one would assume the ingenious writers and story tellers who created them would like them to be told. A vast accomplishment, this document has been printed and reprinted ever since it was first written over a hundred years ago. Every known god or goddess is allotted their tales, which include various versions, stating the details that differ from version to version. Colorful descriptions of each deity are accompanied by a complete list of their many different names. Both new and old versions of the book are still available. As an added bonus, it does not have a bias towards other religions, but approaches the subject in a slightly more scientific manner.

None Other than the BEST in Mythology!! 5 Mar. 2015
By C. Hughes - Published on Amazon.com

This was my 8th grade English class text in my favorite teacher's class (1959). I thought that I would never even remember the name of it let alone find it for sale somewhere!! I am so astounded and thrilled. This is the finest mythology text of ALL time. For Greek/Roman mythology lovers everywhere this is a MUST read. The 1893 edition (hardbound) has all of the original published "prints" in it and later reprints (Dover paperbacks) don't, so I've been told. I dearly love this book...memories evoked. I've managed to find two of the first editions!!
Great condition for the age! 19 April 2013

The only reason that I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is because while it has many stories within it, I was hoping for a few more. The book itself and the contents are amazing as far as I'm concerned though!

Ilustrations 24 July 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The book description mentions that it includes ilustrations from recognized painters, but the book does not include anyone, only the one in the cover. If you can choose the dover's edition you can give the 5 stars.
