Product Description

Product Description

This book presents accounts of economic and psychological analyses of association football (or soccer as it is popularly known in the USA). As football is widely accepted to be the world s most popular sport, the case for scientific investigation of its characteristics is self-evident. As the contributions to this book demonstrate, the game of football offers an ideal opportunity to empirically investigate a wide range of broad issues, for example: behavioural decision-making; judgmental forecasting; motivation; game-theoretic models of strategic choice; competition and labour markets. Are teams more likely to concede a goal after having just scored? Does the team going first in a penalty shoot-out have an advantage? Should goal-keepers dive or stay put for penalty kicks? Do referees make decisions consistently? Why do fans like their teams? What factors influence the career of footballers? How well can experts predict football matches? How accurate are prediction markets? How does the stock-market react to match outcomes? These questions and others are addressed in this book. A particular focus is the investigation of popular conceptions and misconceptions about football. Of interest to psychologists, behavioural economists and football enthusiasts with an analytic approach to understanding the game, this book brings together contributions from a range of academic disciplines and will stimulate further research into football and the intriguing insights into behaviour it offers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Football revealed, 17 Dec 2008
By E. Juliusson (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Football might be the ultimate opium for the people. Why is that? Personally I think it because everybody can win with bit of luck and we can include any explanation we want to account for it. But are the explanations based on facts or things we want to see.

But even if we watch and experience football all the time we cannot helped from having all kinds of misbeliefs about the sport. There is more than meets the eye. Statisics for instance.

In football there are lot of ideas and speculations about outcomes and why expensive players only play well some of the time. What determinates their varied performance? This new book Myths and Facts about Football definitely provides the possibility of understanding the most popular sport in terms of evidence based wisdom rather than speculations. I think it manages to clear many things out. At least this book is deadly serious about the task.

The book cover many different areas like which corner goalkeeper should cover to more practical areas such as what it means to choose football as a carrier. So it touches on various things.

It is a welcomed book that one can learn something new about football.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant new take on Football, 3 Dec 2008
By John A. Jones (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having watched and played a lot of football I thought I had a pretty good idea about the game, however, this book has just proved me wrong!! It looks at football from a different angle, an angle which is backed up by science. For example, it explains why a keeper should stay in the middle of a penalty shootout and not dive, or, that scoring just before half time doesn't really matter.

A brilliant book for people who want to know facts about football and be amazed how many myths there really are.

After reading this book you won't be able to watch a football match witout thinking John Motson doesn't really know what he is talking about.
