Biography

The Bee Gees were a British singing group consisting of three brothers: Barry Gibb and twins Robin Gibb and Maurice Gibb. Not only were they successful in their own right, with seven Grammys to their name, their body of work has been re-interpreted by a huge variety of other artists, from Elvis and Dolly Parton to Billy Corgan and Feist. Of their 35 albums, 200 million copies have been sold, ... Read more in Amazon's Bee Gees Store

The Mythology boxed set is a true labour of love for the Brothers Gibb. Released to continue the celebration of their golden anniversary, the siblings share 50 years of memories with a musical and visual scrapbook all contained within Mythology.

The package contains four discs, each spotlighting a different Gibb brother, including one dedicated to Andy. The songs were hand picked by Barry, Robin and Maurice’s widow Yvonne (with a helping hand from their children Adam and Samantha), along with Andy’s daughter Peta.

With a 60 page booklet of personal photographs and liner notes penned by the band themselves, this 81 track decade spanning collection is the ultimate collectors item and contains two previously unreleased Maurice Gibb tracks and one previously unreleased Andy Gibb recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gibb brother's family album 18 Nov 2010
By James B. Spink HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Bee Gees Mythology is neither a conventional Greatest Hits nor a traditional Best Of but is really a sort of family favourites album. It does, however, contain many hits and many great tracks, along with some lesser known and rare material, and should have some appeal for Bee Gees fans and the more casual listener alike. It has obviously been compiled with much consideration by the two remaining Bee Gees, and other family members, with each of the first three CDs dedicated to an individual Bee Gee brother and a forth disc for younger brother Andy.

The collection is presented in the form of a small book with the CDs held inside the front and back covers. The book celebrates the brothers fifty years in the music business and will be of great interest to the bands fans as it is both informative and also contains plenty of rare photos. Although I already have much of the material featured here, as will many other fans, the price (at the time of this review around sixteen pounds) makes this collection really good value and it provides a good overview of the Gibb brothers career. For those only interested in a few of the tracks Amazon is also offering MP3 downloads of each one individually.

For those just looking for the hits other collections may offer a better selection, but for those wanting to celebrate the enormous variety and breadth of the Gibb brothers material then Mythology offers that perspective. Other reviewers have commented on the length of time it has taken to finally release this project - but it has been worth the wait. A fine tribute to an extremely talented family who are unique in the music industry - excellent value and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gibb Brothers Family Album 8 Feb 2010
By Martin A Hogan HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Sure, the stats are there. Barry Gibb has written (16) number one hits. The Bee Gees have the rare claim of occupying the #1 and #2 positions on Billboards Music Charts (behind the Beatles and Elvis Presley). The Bee Gees have had (9) number one hits; six of them in a row (behind the Beatles and Mariah Carey). And now it's their 50th anniversary. But this box set represents more than just that.

Twenty years ago, the Bee Gees released Tales From Bros Gibb, comprising all their singles and B-Sides on four discs (up to 1990). Now twenty years on, they focus in the songs they take most pride in. This time, they include brother Andy Gibb, who was heavily rumored to become the fourth Bee Gee in the late 1980's, before his tragic death. This is a musical collection of the biggest family pop/rock group in history.

Each disc is focused on one brother. Barry's disc (like the others) relies strongly on his lead vocals and comprises mostly hits. "Spirits (Having Flown)" begins the set, being one of the arguably best compositions the group has produced and ends with their first notable single, "Spick And Specks" from Australia in 1966. Each song is carefully remastered, a few in mono and the remainder improved in clarity and state of the art stereo. Barry, noted for his strong vocals including falsetto includes a few album cuts and previously unreleased cuts that are a marvel. "Barker Of The UFO" is a bewildering cut, but perhaps reflects the sixties atmosphere of random fun. Mostly, this disc shows Barry`s choices as being some of his finest in composition and production.

Robin's disc also carries several hits, but contains some album cuts and B-Sides that could have been singles, or were for other artists. "Love Me" and his solo's "Juliet" and "Saved by The Bell" are historic masterpieces. The exquisite, "The Longest Night", almost a single and one of his most romantic is haunting. Pull in the ethereal, "Rings Around The Moon" and his version of "Islands In The Stream" and you get a clear idea of what Robin's voice can wield. For a true crowd pleaser, Robin includes the anthemic song, "Odessa" from 1969. A song that has received extensive critical acclaim as a masterpiece of songwriting and singing.

Maurice Gibb never had a lead vocal single, as his expertises were in arrangement instrumentals and harmonizing, the latter being the magical glue that held the brothers harmonies together. From the sixties simple, yet satisfying, "Suddenly" to his post-mortem tribute song, "Man In The Middle", Maurice proves his talents. To emphasize his own style and talent, this collection contains two remarkable previously unreleased songs, "Angel Of Mercy" and "The Bridge" with shared vocals with his daughter Samantha of `Samantha Gibb and the Cartels'. Maurice's solo singles, "Railroad' and "Hold Her In Your Hand" are here in digital delight. It s a shame that the B-Side of "Railroad", the song "I've Come Back" is not here. His songs were lovingly chosen by his wife Yvonne and children Samantha and Adam Gibb.

Although Andy Gibb unfortunately never became the fourth Bee Gee, his songs were chosen by his daughter Peta, who shows a talent for what her father's best songs truly were. All of Andy's singles are here (other than the notorious novelty song, "All I Have To Do Is Dream" with a C-list actress). But she cleverly mostly picks out the songs that Andy wrote himself. Most of his first album cuts are included here, pure in their style and innocence. Olivia Newton-John is included as well (a long time family friend) in a duet along with a heart-breaking unreleased song, "Arrow Through The Heart".

On this box set, it truly is a family affair. The accolades are included with the music (which is enough already!), along with a 60-page booklet with rare family photographs from the early sixties to the recent. The Bee Gees history is carefully chronicled with excerpts from many artists. It starts with Barry Gibb under the title "From Our Family" and continues with his heartfelt reminiscing, particularly about Andy. Many many quotations are here, from Robin Gibb to Yvonne, Samantha and Adam Gibb. Peta Gibb also describes in loving terms her feelings about her father's legacy. The accolades don't stop there. Included in this tribute are extensive comments from extraordinary people like David English, Robert Stigwood, George Martin, Cliff Richard, Graham Nash, Elton John, David Foster, Olivia Newton-John, Franki Valli, Brian Wilson, Burt Bacharach, Glen Campbell, Kenny Rogers, Dionne Warwick, Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake and many many others. There is so much more in this extraordinary box set that begs a look and a listen. Not many artists have achieved so much. Only one family has reached this height. The Bee Gees are forever.

By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Originally released in a long boxed set, this collection now comes in a 4CD jewel case. This may have compromised the presentation a little, but it made the set much more affordable. I bought the jewel case version, which contains a booklet that runs to around 72 pages, but without page numbers (so I could have counted wrongly). This is not a hits collection although plenty of hits are featured. Because of that, the booklet does not included an overview of the Bee Gees' biography and career, but it does have plenty of pictures and tributes from family members and others. I was particularly interested in the comments from some of the singers who worked with one or more of the Bee Gees. I found Kenny Rogers' comments about the recording of Islands in the stream particularly amusing. (Buy or borrow the set to read them.)

I already owned several compilations of Bee Gees music when I bought this, so I already had some of the tracks on the first two CD's, but not as many as I expected. I never bought any of Andy's music but I'm pleased to find it here. However, I bought this compilation because I like the idea of each brother having one CD featuring songs with their voices prominent. Their voices are not all that different from each other, so it's not always easy to distinguish them. This set makes the differences clearer.

The tracks were chosen by Barry and Robin, both still alive at the time the original set was compiled, and relatives of the other two brothers. (By the time I wrote this review, only Barry was still alive.) Personally, I liked all aspects of the Bee Gees' music, although I always hoped to hear more of their late sixties folk-pop music eventually. I was therefore pleased to find a good sprinkling of non-hits from the era featured here.

I do not know exactly how the family made their choices, but the CD's for Barry and Robin feature plenty of Bee Gees hits and some versions of songs they wrote that were hits for others (Heartbreaker, Love me, If I can't have you, More than a woman, Islands in the stream) as well as some comparative obscurities. One famous song not featured is Nights on Broadway, which was a Bee Gees hit in America, but a UK hit for Candi Staton. From the sixties, a notable omission is World. These are not the only omissions, as you'll find if you look at a list of their hits.

There are other songs that the Bee Gees wrote that other artists recorded and with which I am familiar, not all of which were recorded by the Bee Gees. The one omission that I am most familiar with that they definitely recorded was recorded by Olivia Newton-John and became the title track to her album Come On Over during her country music phase. Olivia appears in this box via a duet with Andy on his CD. She is also one of the singers whose tribute is featured in the booklet.

Maurice's CD features no big hits. As I used to own E S P on vinyl, I must have heard Overnight, but I don't remember it (I got rid of most of my vinyl collection in 1993), nor do I recognize any of the other tracks on his CD. The CD for Andy features his big hits, which is inevitable as this is the first time that he has featured on a Bee Gees compilation.

If you`re only interested in hits, you'll likely think that this collection contains far too much filler. If, like me, you want to explore the album tracks without necessarily buying a lot of their original albums, this will suit you ideally.
