I had the vinyl of this decades ago, and nearly wore it out! This one will definitely come to my desert island with me. Sad and funny and poetic. Up there with Joni Mitchell's 'Blue', though quite different.

I don't understand why this album isn't recognised as a classic.....it's amazing in every respect, at once hysterical and tragic...just beautiful

I have just bought the CD version of an LP I have long had in my collection and delighted to listen to Dory Previn, with a voice the female equivalent of Leonard Cohen, all over again. Others will no doubt review individual tracks and my "review" is only to admire the content whilst the music underscores the feelings ascribed to the lyrics.

I first heard this in the early seventies and never forgot it. 3 decades later I bought the CD. It has to be one of the most honest, heartbreaking albums of all time. I believe she wrote this after her breakup with Andre Previn, and though there is no mention of this, each song is a story of heartbreak, loneliness and sadness. Listen to Yada Yada to feel her loneliness while talking about things that do not matter; The Game, about how everything is fixed for her to be a loser; Angels and Devils to learn how we all need different kinds on love on different days. All the tracks are brilliant but my favourite is Her Mother's Daughter which is a sory of a lonely elderly mother inventing excuses why her daughter should not leave home and her. Heartbreaking and deeply thoughtful stuff. It is a must listen, even if just once.

How this album doesn't leave blood stains on the speakers I'll never know - it's basically an immensely intelligent, poetical woman ripping her heart out and slapping it on the restaurant table in front of you. And doing it again EVERY time you play it. As others have said here, it's tragic and funny all in the same instances, and if you've ever had any sort of grown up love affair something here will grab you by the relevant privates and squeeze. Musically it's more jazz than folk (a lot more) and very, very mellow. Just the thing when there's nobody around to stay 'til sunrise.

I got this on vinyl around the time it first came out, and having been without a record deck for about 10 years until recently, did miss it. Comparing the two now, the vinyl has more depth and resonance, but CD quality will do.

It brings the old times back - memories of patterned dresses, the "earth mother" hippy look, smells of patchouli (and other things..). It is wholly original, with beautifully crafted lyrics and music which is very artfully constructed. Some of it, primarily the searingly painful personal story of being discarded for a younger woman, is unashamedly bitter and angry, yet never spiteful. There is so much of one person's life in this album, laid bare for all to see (recalling Larkin's line "Your mind lay open like a drawer of knives"). But it also has delicacy, the joys of love however fleeting, and indeed what would now be called "casual sex".

And as others have suggested, it's often funny in a hard way, as in Mary C. Brown: "She died in less than a minute and a half/She looked a bit like Hedy Lamarr".

It is a complex, thoroughly grown-up piece of work. You feel that it was a personal project which wasn't really about entertaining other people. She recorded this because she had to.

Most people seeking this out will already be familiar with Dory Previn. For those who aren't, get an idea by looking for the songs on YouTube. It's possible to pinch most of them from there, but well worth shelling out for the CD or MP3 download in higher quality.
