Product Description

Product Description

Mysticism is Evelyn Underhill's seminal work on the subject. The book is divided into two parts, "The Mystic Fact" and "The Mystic Way." In the first part Underhill explores the theological, psychological, and philosophical underpinnings of mysticism from a historical perspective. In the second part Underhill examines the application of mysticism in one's life as a means for spiritual growth. Evelyn Underhill's Mysticism is both a fantastic introduction to the search for spirituality through mysticism and an almost encyclopedic examination of the subject.

Synopsis

Drawing on sources from all over the world, the author provides an in-depth and comprehensive exploration of humanity's mystical experience. It defines mysticism from different perspectives, sets out its characteristics and explains its relationship to psychology, theology and symbolism. It explores the "mystic way", the stages of mystic consciousness from the self to the union with the Absolute. The book also includes a summary of European mysticism. In 1921, Evelyn Underhill was Upton Lecturer on the Philosophy of Religion at Manchester College, Oxford, the first woman to give a series of lectures on theology at Oxford. But, it was her writing that brought her an international reputation and a fellowship at King's College for Women.

Scholarly, and Deep 14 May 2010
Format:Paperback
A work of great poise, subtlety and erudition.
At the very outset, we are introduced to 4 frameworks of understanding reality:
a) Naturalism: that which is understood b y the senses
b) Idealism: that which is understood by thinking.
c) Philosophic scepticism: refuse to accept the realistic or idealistic answer to the riddle, contending there is no riddle to solve
d) Mysticism: the science of ultimates, the science of union with the absolute.

The book then dwells on the latter in its relationships with psychology, theology, symbolism and magic.

The main, second section of the book called 'The Mystic Way' traces the mystic's emergent journey - awakening, purification, illumination, voices and visions, introspection (recollection, quiet, contemplation), ecstasy and rapture, the dark night of the soul, and finally the Unitive Life.

The coverage is almost completely of the Christian mystical tradition, and hence misses out on many other traditions. That is not a shortcoming of the book, since I believe that the stages of the mystic way are tradition agnostic and universal.

For anyone who found Aurobindo's work a bit abstruse, this book provides similar scale and scope of coverage.

This book is an essential addition to any spiritual library. A must for those on the path to truth, self-realisation and enlightenment. Unfortunately, the print quality is not so great. The ink type is uneven and rather hard on the eye. But I'm glad I have this book. Evelyn Underhill was a genuine awakened-one, you just need to read her words carefully to see that.

We must come to this encounter with minds cleared of prejudice and convention, must deliberately break with our inveterate habit of taking the "visible world" for granted; our lazy assumption that somehow science is "real" and metaphysics is not. "e;

This is materialism inside out: for here what we call the universe is presented as an expression of life, not life as an expression or by-product of the universe. "e;
