By Mr. H TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Album number 17 for the talented German axeman and his band, and it's more of the same, please, as they embark upon tales of dragons and demons, a band unafraid of calling a song "Rock The Nation", which, over a meaty riff, tells of how they, um, rock the nation. Quality!

And quality it is, from top to bottom, with a handful of melodic rock gems and a trio of epics - "Valley Of Sin", "Mystica" and "The Curse Of The Damned" where the band really get to shine. The title track in particular, is a truly outstanding piece of melodic power metal.

There aren't many artists with as many albums behind them as Axel who can still produce music this good, so hats off to the original and best Axel.

Axel should promote himself in the states!!!! 3 Oct 2006
By Droid - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
In December of 2005 (Boneyard...yeah!), I bought myself an XM satellite receiver. Soon after, I heard this great song I thought was the Scorpions. To my surprise it was this guy/band called, "Axel Rudi Pell" and the song was "Only the Strong Survive". There was no comparison to Schenker...this was BETTER! I ordered a couple of Axel CD's. (Shadow Zone, Kings and Queens.) They were GREAT! Since then, I have amassed a collection of 11 CD's and 1 Live DVD (Knight Treasures...highly recommend) and not a dud in the whole lot. I never thought that Axel could beat his 2004 release of "Kings and Queens". I was proven wrong! This is his greatest work of all. The older he gets, the better and more mature his music gets and so does his composing/song writing. Hey, and I'm 50! But,if you enjoy some good melodic rock, guitar wizardry, with a great supporting cast, this is the band for you. Mike Terrana (drummer), he is awesone. Johnny Gioeli...what I can say for his vocals and Volker, Ferdy. When I share these works with my friends, they wonder why they never heard of them. I wonder the same. Please Axel, promote yourself more in the states. Maybe a tour?

Axel has, in my opinion surpassed his mentors/heroes...Blackmore, Schenker brothers, Deep Purple, Dio, etc. (I know, blasphemy to some) Give Axel a listen. You won't be sorry if you like true MELODIC GUITAR ROCK. Exellent production, riffs, shredding, vocals, drums, composing. OK, I'll shut up. 3 Thumbs up!

An Arizona Axel fan,
Dave

"Dreams turned to nightmares and Heaven turned to Hell" 31 July 2007
By D. Knouse - Published on Amazon.com

Fans of Melodic Metal will rejoice when confronted with the incredibly solid musicianship and excellent production value found on this release. But be warned...(pause for dramatic effect)...many of the lyrics are horrible! I was actually laughing at times. Now I don't mind the occasional cheesy lyric, but this album gets downright embarassing at times. Other than the title of my review, taken directly from "The Curse of the Damned" and is completely cliche'd garbage, here are a few examples:

The chorus from "Rock the Nation": "We are a wild creation/and we will rock this town/We gonna rock the nation/so shout it out loud" (yikes!)

The second verse from "The Curse of the Damned": "We sailed across the seven seas, lighting candles in the wind/Moving on to the midnight sun, rising up again/The twisting and swirling, we're losing ground, running out of time/The execution of your mind sent shivers down your spine" ('snicker', as the final line is most appropriate)

The first line from "Losing the Game" (prepare yourself for this one): "Running and hiding, out on the run/Fast as an arrow or a firing gun" (whew!)

I am saddened by all the poor lyrics amidst such strong performances by a very solid band. But if you can handle "Rock the Nation" in all its cheesy glory then the rest of the album will be easy to digest. For myself, all this cheese makes me a bit constipated. What a disappointment. Hire a lyricist already!
