4.0 out of 5 stars Top quality crime writing, 25 Mar 2009
By Alexander Bryce (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Anyone buying this book should be sure to have enough time to read 50 to 100 pages at a stretch. Once started, it is a compulsive page turner.
Evil comes close to three kids and contaminates one of them. This evil will stay with him for the rest of his life. It will ruin their fragile friendship. It will haunt him, fill him with self doubt, with fear and in the end destroy all his hard endeavours to live a normal family guy life.
Twenty five years on the savage murder of a nineteen year old daughter brings them together again from their different adult lives. At this stage i feared a cliche strewn , one for all and all for one mystery as they unite to solve the crime. How wrong i was! Dennis Lehane is much better than that. Be prepared for many conflicts old and new; many twists and turns; many shocks before the truth is finally known.
I have no time for formularistic "who done it thrillers" some of which must surely be written by computer. This is nothing like those efforts. Mystic River is crime writing at its very best. This is my first , but certainly not my last Dennis Lehane.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Past Never Really Dies, 5 Mar 2009
By Stephanie Sane (from the Asylum) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Back in 1975 Sean Devine and Jimmy Marcus two friends whose fathers worked together and Dave Boyle, a kid who tagged along whenever he could were playing in the street when a car with two strangers claiming to be policemen pulls up. They ask the boys where they live. Sean and Jimmy lie and say they live on the street where they are playing. Dave tells the truth and the men take him away, supposedly to return him to his parents, however these are bad guys. After a hellish time in captivity, Dave escapes, but he is never the same again, the kids in school know something has happened to him and treat him like a leper.

Twenty-five years in the future, Sean is now a cop when Jimmy's nineteen year-old daughter Katie is kidnapped and murdered. Katie's boyfriend and another man she had been seeing are suspect, however Dave came home that night with someone else's blood on his clothes claiming he'd been mugged and his wife eventually suspects him of the crime.

This is the beginning of a mystery/thriller that kept me reading through two days of my Hawaiian vacation. I could have been on the beach, sunning myself or touring off, seeing the sight, but instead I was locked away in my room at the Honolulu Hilton, engrossed in this book. Do I think I got short changed on my vacation? Not a bit. I'd seen the movie and excellent as it was, you have to read Mr. Lehane's very fine prose to really get under the skin of these three boy and to see how one horrible event in their past came back to haunt them as adult. This is just a super read.
