These are delightful poems, crammed with images that range from quirky and fun to the deeply affecting. Nature is all around and birds of every shape, size and description catch the author's eye - seagulls cawing, swans "filling the stillness of the night", ravens turning to face the future. The author is passionately and deeply concerned about Icelandic nature and how it is being ravaged by the construction of a gigantic reservoir in the east of the country, as well as the building of a dam on one of the most important breeding grounds for the pink-footed goose. She writes a fervent treatise on the subject alongside one of her poems, citing connections with The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Yet the prevalent tone in the book is not 'heavy' - one of my favourite poems is about a "workaholic washing machine" infused with such a complex and intriguing personality that it could easily make a fascinating character in a novel! This is a collection that plays on the myriad of facets of the human personality and the natural world. Very much recommended.
