Book Description

The festive follow-up to The Third Pig Detective Agency.

When Father Christmas goes missing on Christmas Eve eve, Mrs Christmas calls on our intrepid hero Harry Pigg to track him down.

What follows is another hardboiled caper featuring fairy tale villains, plenty of red herrings, a few close shaves, a couple of punch ups and a very clever twist.

Aided and abetted by his sidekicks Jack Horner and the genie from the lamp, Harry tries to save Christmas before time runs out.

If only he didn’t have to deal with those bloody annoying elves.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 26 Sept. 2011
By Mr T
Format:Kindle Edition
Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Bob Burke's first book, I was eagerly awaiting this, but was left very disappointed.
Where as the first book was witty, surprising and completely enchanting, this book felt too forced and far less engaging.
Too many times Burke tries to add humour with witty asides, which become tiresome and actually detract from the adventure.
The Pig Detective becomes a somewhat irritating character as a result.
There are still some nice moments in the book, but with more accomplished editing, it could have been so much better.
I do however hope there will be a third installment, and that it hits the heights of the original.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great follow up 18 Dec. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Having read The Third Pig Detective Agency and being given a taster as to the premise behind The Ho Ho Ho Mystery I eagerly anticipated this second instalment. I was not disappointed! The story is great and the clever use of fairy tale characters never fails to make me laugh. Unlike some other reviews suggest, I had no problem keeping track of the plot and found Harry Pigg's anecdotes only added to the humour rather than detracting from the plot line. This series is great and I cannot wait for the next chapter in Harry Pigg's life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bringing home the bacon 18 April 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Great light read. Entertaining. Good follow up to the first in the series. Touch of Jasper fforde. Good to read as a break from the hard nosed crime thrillers. Looking forward to the next in the series. Novel book design as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Surprise hit for me. 17 Feb. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a surprise hit of 2014 for me. It was the first Bob Burke, Third Pig Detective Agency book I'd read and to be honest if it wasn't a book club choice I don't think I would have picked it up, after all, the protagonist was a pig! But, I loved it. The narrative style of Harry Pigg was reminiscent of 1950's noir and it was set from the first scene where we - and he - were meeting Mrs C (Christmas) who was reporting her husband was missing and possibly kidnapped and if they didn't find him in time then Christmas wouldn't happen. The description of Mrs C in her chair were just wonderful. Harry Pigg's disbelief that she could be telling the truth - coming from a pig!

It was a great start to a great little book. There were some great scenes in there with some brilliant humour, along with bizarre imagery in your head as Harry clings to things with his trotters! (I'm sorry for all the exclamation marks, but come on we're talking about a pig).

The narrative style, along with the humour and nods to things such as CSI Miami made this a great read. It isn't a long book, it's a perfect size for such a story. It only has four stars because though I really enjoyed it and would read another, it's not something I'd rush out to read right now, but I can say, I'm really glad I had the opportunity to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining! 7 Jan. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was not an author I'd read before. nor a series I'd heard of - I just wanted some Christmassy stuff over the holiday period. For the first few pages I didn't know what to make of it - was it intended for kids or adults? I still don't know - but I don't really care. It was just good fun, encompassing humour from dry to slapstick and a bit of a mystery to boot. The characterisation certainly made me smile and left me thinking I must look out for the 1st and 2nd books to add to my ever increasing collection. For me it did exactly what a book should do - took me somewhere else.

3.0 out of 5 stars not so Ho Ho Ho 7 Jan. 2013
By nicola
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When I read the plot line and reviews for this book, I was expecting something a bit funnier, more Pratchett-esque. The plot did not grip me, there were not many laughs and I only read to the end because I was hoping it would get a bit better.

More So so so than Ho Ho Ho.

1.0 out of 5 stars Is this a book for adults? 27 Dec. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I couldn't work out whether this was an adult's or children's' book. I ploughed through it, the idea was quite clever, but I couldn't understand why the detective was a pig. Was it meant to be funny? I shan't buy any more in this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice easy read 31 Aug. 2013
By JLD
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Great for kids, too lightweight for adults. Like the look of the book and subject and had thoughts that may be on the same level of Jasper Fforde and Malcolm Pryce so was rathe disappointed when didn't even come close.

3.0 out of 5 stars An ok tale but not the best
A bit of light hearted fun but the plot line is somewhat predictable, "somewhat like the seven extra words required" so that I can save this review.
