Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The real mystery is why it took so long for Etta James to win a Grammy. But this great American vocalist claimed her first statue by paying tribute to another grand singer. James's versions of Billie Holiday-linked tunes like "Don't Explain", "You've Changed", "Lover Man" and "The Man I Love" are the best readings of Lady Day's signatures in a generation. Pianist Cedar Walton leads the seven-piece band in spare and graceful arrangements faithful to the mainstream jazz sound of the 1940s and 1950s, which gives James ample room to exercise her soaring range and deliver a dazzling, seductive and warm tour de force. --Ted Drozdowski

Album Description

Jamesetta Hawkins was born on January 25, 1938. She decided at an early age that she wanted to be a performer but the urge to sing was a part of her make-up. Johnny Otis, impressed with Etta’s singing, took her to Los Angeles to record. ‘The Wallflower’, with the artist credit Etta James and ‘The Peaches’, was released in time for Christmas and was Etta’s sassy debut and would frequent the R&B charts for seventeen weeks, rising to No. 2.

Her first release ‘All I Could Do Was Cry’, for Chess, entered the R&B chart in May 1960 and rose to its peak at No. 2. Her second release, ‘My Dearest Darling’, made it to No. 5. People began to compare her with Dinah Washington, who along with Billie Holiday, was Etta’s ideal.

In 1993 she signed with Private Music, telling its president Ron Goldstein she wanted to cut an album dedicated to Billie Holiday. Goldstein was enthusiastic and attached producer John Snyder to the project. Pianist Cedar Walton was engaged as arranger for the sessions, which included Holiday’s own ‘Don’t Explain’, ‘The Man I Love’, ‘How Deep Is The Ocean’ ‘Body And Soul’ and ‘The Very Thought Of You’. Etta recalls ‘His charts were clean and crisp, not a wasted note, and his own playing incredibly sensitive. He created the mood I was looking for. That allowed me to pay my respects to Billie, not by imitating her, but by singing in my own style.’ Such was the artistic success of the enterprise, Etta won a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, an award she never expected to receive. In the same year, she was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. In 2003 she received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2008, it was announced that Beyonce Knowles would portray her in the film, Cadillac Records.

Being a big Billie Holiday fan, I admit to listening to this CD with some skepticism. There have been many Billie tribute CD's over the years, few ever equalling her soulfulness and artistry, but after listening to this CD, Etta really opens my eyes and ears. I wouldn't expect someone primarily known as a soul-R&B singer to nail down these songs in an entirely new blues-soul context yet retaining its jazz structure. She doesn't really have Billie's fragility of phrasing, but shows the same X factor of emotional and gut-wrenching elements in her interpretations, though on a grander scale. She adds some of her ever-present feistiness as well, which of course Billie never had, but it never detracts from the jazz feel of this CD. Feistiness is, after all, what makes her Etta James. She shows remarkable restraint when she needs to be in this jazz context. Congrats to a brave Etta in tackling these songs so identified with Billie. You pulled it off, girl!

I want to give you a feeling for this wonderful album that is more than one man's view, so I've gathered up and collated five 5 star reviews to persuade you that this is a "must have" for any collection. Here they are......

Etta James finally won a Grammy for this album which is shocking cause hello she's Etta James what in the world took the grammys so long...
this is a great cd ..that has a living legend pay tribute to another departed legend of jazz Billy Holiday..
her range is incredible...considering she is a true baritone...amazing...one of her best albums..

I was surprised that I would love this CD so much because I had heard of Etta James but I didn't know too much about her or her music (she was a little before my time). I have to say this CD is timeless. I love the words of the songs and the richness of her voice. Etta truly makes me wish I could have been around to hear Billie do the honors herself.

'Ya heard? I'm'a make this as short as possible. Etta James has one'a the mos' passionate an' wrenching voices in all blues n' soul music an' when she takes on THESE numbers, you hear that an' them some. As a big fan'a Billie Holiday not many singer could give much credibility to performin' the songs that she made famous. But this jus' works. Ms. James, rather than adopting the ballads with her own style, jus' adopted a DIFFERENT style than she normally does so that she can sing 'The Man I Love', 'Embraceable You', an' 'The Very Thought of You' with all the relaxed subtlety that Lady Day did. With a nice jazz backing section, she lays the loveliness on thick. Strictly fans'a her work only may not be as enthralled by this set, but if your musical tastes cover the whole spectrum from blues to soul to this ol' traditional-style jazz, then definitely check this out. This is one'a the most earnest, sincere, an' well-done tribute albums of all time. Ms. Billie would be proud.

If you adore Billie and love Etta then you should be in heaven! I bought this on impulse and consider this one of my most treasured CDs. All the wonderful "old school" lyrics - the way they don't write them anymore - but with the full, rich sound of modern technology. Great tribute to Lady Day by a legend who can blow away a room full of Britneys!

I always liked Etta's A Sunday Kind of Love, so I was checking Amazon for CD's by her. I sure picked a great one. Mystery Lady is my favorite CD. I play it almost everyday. Her voice is so clear and strong. I recommend it to everyone.

A good tribute to the legendary but rather mournful Billie Holiday.
Don't expect any up-tempo offerings, every song is about medium tempo and by the the time the cd is ended you might be asleep, however, you can always start it on track 5 or 6 next time. Excellent sax work but largely a soporific selection that could do with a bit of livening up. Even Billie H was known to have a bit of a prance every so often, and a bit of medium to up tempo was sorely missed. If you have just been divorced or bereaved I definitely would not recommend it.
