Image of Mickey Hart

Mickey Hart is best known for his nearly three decades as an integral part of an extraordinary expedition into the soul and spirit of music, disguised as the rock and roll band the Grateful Dead. As half of the percussion tandem known as the Rhythm Devils, Mickey and Bill Kreutzmann transcended the conventions of rock drumming. Their extended polyrhythmic excursions were highlights of Grateful ... Read more in Amazon's Mickey Hart Store

A new Mickey Hart is almost cause for celebration in this household!

"In the beginning there was noise. Noise begat rhythm. And rhythm begat everything else. . . . . . . .
Rhythm is one of the most powerful ordering principles of the Universe, and one of its greatest mysteries" so says Mickey in the notes to this album.

It kicks off with a very atmospheric instrumental, Heartbeat of the Sun, but then moves into a series of songs. For those interested, there are 8 new sets of HUnter lyrics with a couple by Mickey. The album overall is better than Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, his last album of songs, but is not up to the standard of Planet Drum or the other wonderful percussion albums that he has made, hence 4 stars.

An interesting feature are the "sounds of the universe" which (I presume) are the electronic sounding noises that create rhythms on the tracks. There is even reference to what stars/galaxies the signals are from.

The liner notes contain a couple of paragraphs from academics and one states that "Hart now broadens his focus to cosmic and universal rhythms as opposed to global rhythms". However, as it is Mickey there are plenty of global influences to be found.

Packaging is a digipak with an eight page booklet. No lyrics included sadly, but they may be accessed at a website address supplied.

The Mickey Hart Band's latest cd is wonderful, magical, and a joy to experience! This amazing fusion of melody, sound, rhythm, good heart and spiritual awareness transports, or opens, the listener (this listener anyway) into the heart of the present, touching upon insights into our nature and experience, beyond the surface layers of illusory appearances, as projected and experienced by these fantasy egos, which most of us seem to generally insist on identifying with! If you enjoyed Hart's "Mystery Box" cd, while the music here is a perhaps slightly less 'poppy', this cd would probably be a must! May this open the hearts and minds of listeners everywhere!!!

A fantastic cd with Hart! 16 Jun. 2012

As a consummate music buyer this is my top pick for 2012 so far. It is my belief that seldom does the best music ever get heard. This cd deserves to be heard and then heard again and again. It breaks new ground for Hart. It it catchy, it has hooks, you will sing along to it. It is a solid album with great performances and writing and a sonic depth that is seldom heard. This is a purchase for both the music lover and the true audiophile.

Of interest is that in sound it is a true break away from any semblance of the Grateful Dead. Being a Deadhead I thought this might be a disappointment; but in truth it follows suit with "7 Walkers" and Phil Lesh's "There and Back again" in that it dares to break new ground and is "further" ahead for it.

This is a truly astounding, solid cd with no filler. I hoestly love every track. If I had to pick highlights it would probably be: "Slow Joe Rain", "Cut the Deck", "Let there be Light" and Through Endless Skies" but that is a disservice to so many other great songs contained on this collection.

What makes this CD so Special? It has Hart...the pun is intended and deserved. In having heart it has a music for the masses top layer, and a depth of thought and intelligence under layer that adds an appeal that adds dimension even after repeated listens.

The band is listed simply as "performers" Although I could site some great guests and players on this cd, the strength of the cd is the performance. Simply- the sound is unified and everyone stands out; which makes it unnecessary to credit the individual. It is proper to offer a nod to Robert Hunter for the lyrics to many of the songs, but only because both the music and the lyrics resonate in your head long after the cd is over.

I also need to acknowledge the depth of sound on this cd in a process referred to as "sonification." I could write a whole review of the sound quality of the cd. I am running this through a Denon amp with Klipsch towers and paradigm surrounds. I owns thousands of cds- sonically this falls into my top 3. This is the ONLY cd I own that sounds equally good in both stereo and surround. Every element of this cd sounds like it was a labor of love for Mickey Hart and company with the ultimate benefit being shared with the listener.

On so many levels this cd amazes me. Are you going to hear it on the radio? No. Are the masses going to buy it? No. Should it be in your collection regardless of your typical music preference? Most certainly!

Creative new direction for Mickey Hart 13 April 2012

While I love hearing Phil and Bobby tour with Furthur, it's exciting to hear new material from original members of the Grateful Dead. This album combines new lyrics from Robert Hunter, with interesting new rhythms with a techno beat and bluesy vocals. Mickey has taken World Music to a new level- Extra Terrestrial. Listen and enjoy.

Mysterium Tremendum 11 April 2012

This is the best since Music Box. The groove is on, vocals teetering on Peter Gabriel and plenty of space music, but not to much. The ambiance of this album is wonderful. Turn it up and enjoy the trip!

Wonderful 25 April 2012

I'm very pleased to be the fifth review for this album and everyone is a five star. From start to finish - over seventy minutes - the music just lifts off into wonderful compositions. The band and soulful singers are very much at home moving the entire proceedings to the next level. If you have the chance to see this project live you should definitely do so. I had the pleasure to catch them last night and looked forward to hearing everyone of the compositions on here, most of which they did play :). In rhythm

GRATE ALBUM 1 Jun. 2012
By Thomas A. Minor - Published on

Mickey never seems to disappoint . . . who would have thought the Grateful Dead drummers would be the only remaining members putting out consistent new music post GD years? I was a bit leary with this release thinking it would be a bit too spacey for my liking. But like with all Mickey's albums, I was very pleasently surprised. Solid songwriting & solid lyrics via Robert Hunter seems to always be a winning formula.
