Product Description

Product Description

London, 1946: An actress is murdered, not just on camera but in full view of a crowded film set. Only six people had an opportunity to administer the poison yet not one of them had a conceivable motive. As Evadne Mount, bestselling crime novelist, discovers, however, all six did have a motive for committing another, earlier, still unsolved murder yet, on that occasion, not one of them had the opportunity.

About the Author

Gilbert Adair has published novels, essays, translations, children's books and poetry. He is the acclaimed author of The Postmodernist Always Rings Twice. He has also written screenplays, including The Dreamers - from his own novel - for Bernardo Bertolucci.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sequel is fun but not as good as the original, 12 Oct 2008

Not quite as good as the first Evadne Mount novel (Act of Roger Murgatroyd (Evadne Mount Trilogy)), but ads an interesting satire on the films of Hitchcock to the mix, so it avoids being repetitive, but with a slightly less satisfying denouement. Lots of period detail from the post-war era and some arch dialogue from Evadne make this an enjoyable way to while away a few hours.

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't really gel with me, 1 Feb 2009
By JJ (Scotland) - See all my reviews
As I enjoy murder/mystery stories and like a good laugh (the two not always being mutually exclusive) I thought this would be a good bet. The title was quite amusing and we have the Evadne Mount/Ariadne Oliver character and her pet detective beavering away to find the killer of Evadne's actress friend. (Why is it when a close friend or loved one dies in these type of novels no-one is broken-hearted for too long; maybe a page worth, then it's back to the job of detecting?)
It is not a take on the novel that it almost shares a name with. Agatha Christie is mentioned (as a rival author to Evadne) and it includes an Alfred Hitchcock-like director whose trademark in films is rather like Hitchcocks. So various comparisons to others abound.
The slow burning romance between Evadne and the dectective was a nice touch but I began to find the whole thing a bit long winded, especially the ending. I appreciate that the characters listening to the denouement also found it long winded but that didn't make it any less annoying.
So I have read book 2 and I think that will do me.
