Book Description

The brilliantly witty, charming and devilishly clever new Evadne Mount mystery.

Product Description

London 1946. An actress is murdered, not just on camera but in full view of a crowded film set. Only six people had an opportunity to administer the poison yet not one of them had a conceivable motive. As Evadne Mount, bestselling crime novelist, discovers, however, all six did have a motive for committing another, earlier, still unsolved murder yet, on that occasion, not one of them had the opportunity . . .

Not quite as good as the first Evadne Mount novel (Act of Roger Murgatroyd (Evadne Mount Trilogy)), but ads an interesting satire on the films of Hitchcock to the mix, so it avoids being repetitive, but with a slightly less satisfying denouement. Lots of period detail from the post-war era and some arch dialogue from Evadne make this an enjoyable way to while away a few hours.

As I enjoy murder/mystery stories and like a good laugh (the two not always being mutually exclusive) I thought this would be a good bet. The title was quite amusing and we have the Evadne Mount/Ariadne Oliver character and her pet detective beavering away to find the killer of Evadne's actress friend. (Why is it when a close friend or loved one dies in these type of novels no-one is broken-hearted for too long; maybe a page worth, then it's back to the job of detecting?)
It is not a take on the novel that it almost shares a name with. Agatha Christie is mentioned (as a rival author to Evadne) and it includes an Alfred Hitchcock-like director whose trademark in films is rather like Hitchcocks. So various comparisons to others abound.
The slow burning romance between Evadne and the dectective was a nice touch but I began to find the whole thing a bit long winded, especially the ending. I appreciate that the characters listening to the denouement also found it long winded but that didn't make it any less annoying.
So I have read book 2 and I think that will do me.

By Eileen Shaw TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This novel uses every cliché known to man and woman in the classic crime genre of the 50s and 60s. In its own way it is a tribute to the classic Agatha Christie and even cheekily mentions her as Inspector Trubshawe (the Plodder) proposes a bet between himself and Evadne Mount (the Dowager Duchess of Crime) - if he solves the murder she will dedicate her next book to (the Queen of Crime), Agatha Christie. If she solves the murder, he will marry Evadne.

With such an outcome threatened or promised, it is only left for the rigorous and fiendish plot to unravel before us. This one is set in the burgeoning (1950's) film industry and concerns a Director who is to all intents and purposes Alfred Hitchcock, but is here given another name. Adair pays tribute to Hitchcock's flair and unique edge in his book's title. After all, who else could be identified so easily, solely by the style of his filming? It's fun, throwaway stuff. I probably won't read another in the Evadne Mount series, but luckily Adair has written better books.
