Product Description

Review
"In his breakdown on the Mithraic liturgies Doctor Nabarz has successfully researched the intricate levels of the ritual and also heroically deciphered the language of the aforementioned iconography of Mithras to give us a first class series of ceremonies. . . . Whether the reader is a historian or even a practitioner of esoteric studies, this well presented work is a joy to read. I am delighted it now lives on my shelves."

Synopsis
The Mysteries Of Mithras presents a revival of the magical practices and initiatory system of Mithraism, the ancient Roman mystery religion that was immensely popular in the Roman Legions from the late second century B.C. until A.D. 400 and was taken to every corner of the Roman Empire. As the last pagan state religion in Europe, it was the most important competitor to early Christianity and heavily influenced Christian doctrine and symbolism. The parallels between Christianity and ancient Mithraism are striking - for example, the god Mithras was born of a virgin in a cave on December 25. Payam Nabarz reveals the history, origins and spiritual and philosophical tenets of Mithraism and its connections to Christianity, Islam and Freemasonry. He, also, describes the modern neo-pagan practice of Mithraism in evidence today and for readers who wish to adopt the Mithraic path, he includes seven of its initiatory rituals and meditations, as well as orations and teaching tales, that open the door to the seven Mithraic grades of passage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mithras Reborn!, 15 Aug 2008

From Amazon.com and Silver Star.
Robert C. Carey "cognitive dissident" (Seattle, WA) -
There once was a religion whose savior god was born of a virgin on December 25th and whose baptized followers partook of a Eucharist of bread marked with a cross and of wine symbolizing his holy blood every Sunday. However, this was a very long time before Jesus. The Persian Mithra, Roman Mithras and Vedic Mitra is the patron of several of history's oldest mystery cults, influencing Zoroastrians, Hindus, Christians, Sufis, Yezidis, Gnostics, Freemasons, the legions of the Roman Empire, Celtic Britain and the Golden Dawn. The author covers a vast amount of uncharted history, iconography, literature, practice and belief, exploring the rituals and grades of initiation, related gods, goddesses (notably Anahita) and myths, and a wide range of contemporary and magical revivals. An important element is the ancient text known as the Mithras Liturgy, and the author also reconstructs a series of self-initiations and a useful festival calendar. There are some great illustrations, including an altar cleverly designed with piercings representing constellations lit from below, and both ancient and modern temple sites. There is also a guide to resources including both print and the internet. This is an excellent, wide-ranging and thoughtful book connecting both scholarly and pagan-revival perspectives, linking a whole series of religious traditions to the roots of a complex tree. Highly recommended! ~Shade

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mysteries of Mithras by Payam Nabarz, 10 Mar 2009
By Ms. M. Berlin "Emma Bee" (Yorkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was swept along by Payam's passion for his subject in this very erudite yet readable book which not only brings together the various ancient roots of Mithraism, the universality of ritual activities and religious calendars but also explains how many of its features were "stolen" and "sanitised" by Christianity. It reverentially demystifies the cult of the great spirit Mithras by revealing the initiation ceremony into modern Mithraism, including Zoroastrian hymns of praise to Mithras and his consort/mother Anahita...and so very much more. I now understand why this often misunderstood religion, promoter of peace and love became the religion of choice of the Roman legions! Superbly annotated, illustrated and not totally lacking in humour.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for all serious scholars of religion, 11 Jan 2008
This writer magically unrolls our history and shows those wonderful common threads that run through so many of the worlds strongest religions.
This and his other titles together have proved invaluable in my studies of faith, new and old and this work has the interesting effect of showing the more unusual faiths in a credible light and the more mainstream as the 'heinz' variety that they truly are.

A must for Christian scholars and those who follow a more 'magical' path.
