5.0 out of 5 stars Hollywoods greatest 16 Sep 2008
I couldnt put this book down! What a fascinating lady Lauren Bacall is.For one of Hollywoods all time greats she is incredibly down to earth and endearing in her candour. Her writing style is very personal ,you can imagine her saying the exact words to you over a gossipy chat and a glass of wine. This book has soul and spirit and brings up close and personal to the reader a priviledged insiders take on Hollywoods golden age and much much more.Lauren Bacall was certainly underrated in her early years in the film industry and the outsiders take on the insiders world that she uniquely brings with her makes for an incredibly dramatic and funny life and read.Anyone remotely interested in Hollywoods golden era or film history should read this book.Very witty.
The stories and style in the book draw you in making you feel the rollercoaster of emotions of the authors world. She comes across as your favourite eccentric aunt or best friends indiscreet mother and yet despite feeling you know Lauren and her world you cant help but think afterwards. What a true star! What a lady! What an icon! What a rarity and untouchable! This paradox of an elusive star quality and a down to earth wise cracking pal is the amazing mystique that is Lauren Bacall.Read this book and find out for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Endless Applause 14 Aug 2009
Miss Bacall made a rare personal appearance in Glasgow, Scotland to promote this, her updated biography. She received a rapturous welcome on to the stage at the packed Royal Concert Hall; a thunderous ovation that came in wave after wave, the applause endless. She had to appeal to us to stop, genuinely touched by our fervent adulation. We knew we were in the presence of one of the last living Hollywood legends. Her appeal, like her career, spanned generations; from New York model to stock actress to film noir ingenue, to leading lady & award-winning Broadway stardom. All of which is superbly told in this volume, her infamous broken glass voice resonating through each page. I was lucky enough to have my copy signed in person; Miss Bacall was still breathtakingly beautiful, and, as I stammered out a few nervous words, she gave me "The Look", which remains as a precious, treasured memory to this day. Yours might not be signed, but you will treasure it, I promise you.

Fascinating insights into this ladies life and times. Very down to earth, honest and sensible.
Sad that so many of them are no longer with us.
A story of love and friendship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected---in a good way! 21 May 2012
By KevineJ
I picked up this book completely randomly from a pile of books when I was looking for something to read back at school 3 years ago. It turned out to be the best autobiography I have ever read---and trust me I've read a lot, being such a fan of them. Like someone said, the book is really kind of divided into 3 parts; her childhood and earlier pre-Hollywood/superstardom life, then her Hollywood life and marriage to Bogie, and finally her life after Bogie's death after 1957. The earlier years sort of dragged on for me but the second part about how she came into Hollywood and after were just amazing. I could hardly keep the book away from my eyes. The beginning and development of her relationship with Boggie was so captivatingly written. It was so impeccably told and so vivid, I could just SEE it! And I believe that her and Bogie's relationship was without question one of the greatest and realest love stories of all time. Now what I did not expect at all was how sad it was. During the parts about Bogie's cancer and his death, I bawled my eyes out. I really could not stop, I absolutely WEPT! On the whole, its a beautiful story, about a REAL woman who has had REAL life experiences, good and bad times, good and bad choices made along the way. DEFINITELY recommend!

A book that is, mostly, very well written and a thoroughly enjoyable read. It paints a very good picture of Ms Bacall's long and amazing life in the spotlight.
