5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful tribute 6 April 2013
By Rebecca
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
There is a show currently going around the UK entitled 'Admission: One Shilling', performed by Patricia Routledge and Piers Lane, which tells the story of how Myra Hess came to start the famous lunchtime concerts in London's National Gallery during the Second World War, and this wonderful set of recordings, stunningly remastered and beautifully packaged, makes a fitting companion to that marvellous piece. At six-and-a-half hours this set is superb value, and APR are to be congratulated on producing what must now be the definitive collection for anyone interested in this extraordinary performer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Memories of childhood! 26 July 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This set brought back so many memories. My father went to her National Gallery recitals during WWII, so we had a few of her 78s in the house. I suppose that is the reason that so many of these performances sound 'just right' to me. It is how I got to listen to Debussy and Bach for the first time! Once the LP era came upon us we had other performaces but Hess always seemed to me to have the perfect tempo! And, of course, she was no mean pianist either. I loved this set, beautifully transfered by Mark Obert-Thorn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime 2 Jan 2014
Format:Audio CD
This is a wonderfully valuable set, and full of treasures. However, I wish to comment on one particular piece...

My father always used to say to me that, of all the versions of Beethoven's Op.109 Sonata that he'd ever heard, Myra Hess's was the most perfect. Of course, "Perfect" is a dangerous, if not useless, word to use in such a subjective matter as the evaluation or opinion of a piece of classical music captured in a 'one-off' performance or recording...but in this instance, it is as near justified as I could ever imagine. The resolution of dominant to tonic which closes the restatement of the theme at the end of the finale, so pure and simple yet infinitely changed by the preceding variations, is unutterably sublime, transcendent, and emotionally fulfilling, and worth the price of the set on its own. Yes, the playing on this set is very much of its time - but please don't discard the past in your rush to embrace the future! Dame Myra Hess, even across the decades, still has much to teach us...

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought a a present 25 Jan 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Bought as a present for my brother who is a big classical music buff, he was most impressed that I had managed to find the CD and apparently he knew of the early recordings but had no idea that they had been remastered.
