Product Description

When a corpse is found by the fire in Mycroft Holmes’s rooms in London’s Pall Mall early one morning, the brother of the country’s most famous detective is about to face the greatest mystery of his career – and the greatest danger as well. Within two hours, Mycroft Holmes has been arrested on a charge of murder and taken in handcuffs to Wormwood Scrubs prison. Has he been framed by his greatest enemy, the elusive master criminal the German Count Von Stoltenburg? What happened to the man who changed the locks on his front door six weeks before, found lying senseless on the pavement on his way to Mycroft’s rooms? And what of the man who identified the body as that of a naval engineer?

From his prison cell Mycroft Holmes turns the great engines of his mental powers onto the problem, assisted by the convict who runs the prison, Chalky The Shotgun White. The game’s afoot. But time is short.

Mycroft Holmes and The Adventure of the Naval Engineer is the second in David Dickinson’s brilliant series of novellas that started with Mycroft Holmes and the Adventure of the Silver Birches.

Praise for Mycroft Holmes series:

'The stories are atmospheric, fast-moving, ingenious and very enjoyable.' - Roger Johnson, The District Messenger

David Dickinson is the best-selling author of the Lord Powerscourt series of historical mysteries, including ‘Death of a Pilgrim’ and ‘Death of an Old Master’.

Praise for David Dickinson's Lord Powercourt Series:

'A cracking yarn, beguilingly real from start to finish... you have to pinch yourself to remind you that it is fiction - or is it?' Peter Snow

'This is detective fiction in the grand style; the characters and the plot soar upwards and carry us in their wake. Powerscourt's debut in this intoxicating book is the start of a gilded life in the archives of crime.' - James Naughtie

'In this excellent novel, Dickinson weaves a tale of blackmail and murder among the royals late in Victoria's reign... One hopes to see more of Lord Powerscourt and his friends in the near future.' - Publishers Weekly

5.0 out of 5 stars Likeable and different 1 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
'The Adventure of the Naval Engineer' is the second book in the Mycroft Holmes series - and it's just as intelligent and witty as the first. David Dickinson instantly grips the reader from the start with Mrs Hudson coming across a dead body in the fireplace. We then race along like a train (which I was on when I read the story) to get to a satisfying ending. This ebook series is turning out to be one of the best I've read. The stories are short, involve a clever twist and the central character is likeable and different. It helps that David Dickinson is already a bestselling writer in the genre, and comfortable with both the era and immersing himself in Holmes lore. Can't wait for the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Game's Afoot, Again! 2 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Mycroft Holmes and the Adventure of the Naval Engineer is another compelling short story from David Dickinson. Following on from the Silver Birches, Dickinson drops us right in the middle of a rather suspicious crime scene involving Mycroft and a corpse in his fireplace. By gently unravelling the crime - and by introducing some engaging new customers - the author has delivered another must read for Holmes fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome return 11 Mar 2012
By Natalie
Format:Kindle Edition
The much-awaited return of Dickinson's Mycroft Holmes sees the formidable gentleman exercise his intelligence and wit from a distance as he awaits trial for a crime he did not commit. Caught in a web of lies and double-crossing, Holmes sets about the unenviable task of clearing his name with the odds against him and an unthinkable penalty for failure. We learn more about his closest circle of friends and colleagues as they club together, his eyes and ears around London. Another fantastic and gripping short story by Dickinson.
