Product Description

Product Description

Mycelium Running is a manual for the mycological rescue of the planet. That’s right: growing more mushrooms may be the best thing we can do to save the environment, and in this groundbreaking text from mushroom expert Paul Stamets, you’ll find out how.

The basic science goes like this: Microscopic cells called “mycelium”--the fruit of which are mushrooms--recycle carbon, nitrogen, and other essential elements as they break down plant and animal debris in the creation of rich new soil. What Stamets has discovered is that we can capitalize on mycelium’s digestive power and target it to decompose toxic wastes and pollutants (mycoremediation), catch and reduce silt from streambeds and pathogens from agricultural watersheds (mycofiltration), control insect populations (mycopesticides), and generally enhance the health of our forests and gardens (mycoforestry and myco-gardening).

In this comprehensive guide, you’ll find chapters detailing each of these four exciting branches of what Stamets has coined “mycorestoration,” as well as chapters on the medicinal and nutritional properties of mushrooms, inoculation methods, log and stump culture, and species selection for various environmental purposes. Heavily referenced and beautifully illustrated, this book is destined to be a classic reference for bemushroomed generations to come.

This book is great, written with style humour and charm. Jam-packed with info on many different species and strains of fungi, including sections on the culinary and medicinal values of each. The book also covers subjects such as mycorestoration, mycoforestry and mycopesticides. There is also good advice and info on cultivating mushrooms yourself and how to simulate the natural environment in which the species are naturally found. The book also covers some of the basics, such as life cycles and basic biology. An absolute must for mycologists or anyone interested in how mushrooms can benefit humanity.

A very hopeful story that deserves closer examination by the agricultural world and captures the upbeat philosophy of the author.

The book has a rather agricultural bias in describing the ways fungi can be used in forestry, chemical detoxification and land reclamation. Some interesting examples of commercial mushroom growing and the hippy types that grow them and lots of excellent photographs make this an enjoyable read.

Natures Wisdom 30 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Mycelium Running is a book full of Natures wisdom.
Comprehensive, extensive, enlightening and inspiring; Paul Stamets gives one an easy to read, engaging and well reasearched view of this little known planetary force.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the Natural world.
It's about how to purify water, grow plants better, heal your body and eat well, all through the magic of fungi.
