5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant 23 Feb 2007
By A Mills
Format:Paperback
Because I buy books at a much faster rate than I read them, there are very few books that I will read twice. I have reread Myal three times already. It's just that good.

The other reviewers might be onto something though. The first time I read it, I had to start over after two pages because I was a litle lost. But on the second read all the power and lyricism of the language fell into place and I was bowled over and that was sustained for the entire novel. Like the character Maydene Brassington who stands on a verandah searching for the right word to describe sunset on the island - Brodber also invents a poetry that perfectly fits this village in Jamaica.

A simply brilliant story, told in a simply brilliant style.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent product and service 10 April 2013
By L.A.
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Arrived quickly even though it was an international shipment from the United States, well packaged. Book is a modern classic in postcolonial studies.

3.0 out of 5 stars Open your mind to Myal 4 Mar 2005
Format:Paperback
When I first began reading Erna Brodber's novel Myal, I found it to be confusing to say the least. But it is a book that is worth sticking with. Brodber vividly portrays a world of colour and sound that comes alive on every page. It is best not to try and 'translate' this book, as it deals with some things, such as spirit theft, that may seem alien to the Western reader. But if you can just read it with an open mind and accept what Brodber tells you as the truth then Myal is an enjoyable, if bizarre, read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Simply unintelligent. 4 Oct 2006
Format:Paperback
This is by far the least coherent text I have ever read; and I have read a lot of texts. It comes across as almost amateurish. Some people would argue that the incomprehensible nature of the book is a sign of intelligence and depth; however, if one interprets intelligence as the ability to take initial personal thoughts and translate them into material that is relatable to other people then this does not qualify. The text reads like a 110 pages brainstorm, by a writer with the lack of skill to translate it into something understandable to an audience.
