Product Description

From the Back Cover

This is the official guide to passing the two MySQL certification tests for MySQL 5, the long-awaited major revision of MySQL. The number of MySQL certification exams taken has doubled in the last six months. lists the MySQL certification as one of the top 10 certifications to grow in 2005. MySQL professionals need a way to distinguish themselves from the vast majority of database administrators and developers. With more than 4 million active installations, MySQL is the world's most popular open-source database. Known for its speed, reliability and case of use, MySQL has become a low-cost alternative to expensive database systems such as Oracle, IBM and Microsoft. MySQL AB has aggressively improved the feature set of MySQL with MySQL 5, making it more suitable for enterprise-level applications and uses. The MySQL certification tests, available at over 3,000 PearsonVUE testing centers, is a key component of this enterprise growth strategy, establishing a base level of skills for database users, administrators and programmers.

The MySQL Core Certification is aimed at the database user who wants proof of his or her abilities in such fundamental areas as SQL, data entry and maintenance, and data extraction. The MySQL Professional Certification test is designed for the advanced user who wants to prove his or her knowledge in such areas as database management, installation, security, disaster prevention and optimization. Both tests are thoroughly covered in the MySQL 5.0 Certification Study Guide. Written by Paul DuBois, the leading author of books on MySQL topics, and reviewed for technical accuracy by MySQL AB, this book is the fastest, most reliable way for MySQL users, developers, and administrators to prepare for either of the MySQL tests.

This should be a definite purchase for anyone taking the MySQL 5 exams. Other than highlighting the areas tested by the exams, it also gives good advice on how to prepare, what to expect and which parts of the MySQL website you should be familiar with. My use was limited to the developer exam only however it also covers the administrator exam should that be your goal. The certification format has changed since MySQL 4.x so get the heads up with this must have book.

This book is absolutely essential reading if you're to take the MySQL certification. In fact, although it's always wise to read around a topic from as many sources as possible, I don't believe anybody would have a problem passing the exam using this book alone. It's written in clear, non-ambiguous language and all examples are explained - a real rarity as far as technical books are concerned.

This is a pretty good book as a generic primer on MySQL basics that any half competent MySQL administrator/developer should know. If you are buying it primarily to learn the basics of MySQL and you are not already familiar with the subject matter of database systems theory, it is very useful indeed.

If, on the other hand, you already have reasonably extensive MySQL related experience (e.g. pros and cons of InnoDB vs. MyISAM, writing stored procedures and triggers, tuning sizes of various memory buffers, choosing and configuring hardware to maximize DB performance, basic replication configuration and related logs/files, multi-byte character encodings, space requirements and collations and granting/revoking permissions and setting up users, precedence of various configuration sources and options), then you will probably not learn a great deal from this book that you don't already know. Nevertheless, even if you are an experience MySQL DBA/Developer and plan to use this book as the sole study guide, it certainly covers enough of the subject matter that combined with some experience and deeper understanding, you will be able to pass the exam without any problems.

The book is divided into two halves. MySQL Developer and MySQL Administrator, broadly corresponding to the two certification exams. Note, however, that, from what I can remember from my exams, the exams aren't as clear cut on that separation as the book is. Some of the question in both exams touch upon subject matters covered in the other section of the book. So regardless of which exam you are preparing for you should read the entire book.

Considering this book is over 7 years old now, it is still reasonably close matches the subject matter covered in the exams, and teaches you enough to pass the exams. In light of that, it represents incredibly good value compared to the official Oracle study guide packs.
