Book Description

A wonderfully honest memoir and a celebration of one of the most influential women in Britain's music industry

From the Inside Flap

Jo Whiley is someone millions of us recognise and very few of us know. Jo's a mother, sister, DJ, wife and music-industry insider who throughout her career - and in an age of fleeting celebrity - has earned the respect of her peers and fans by simply being herself and by her constant enthusiasm, be it for established rock 'n roll royalty or for emerging talent. For Jo Whiley, it's all about the music.

My World in Motion offers a unique opportunity to get to know the real Jo Whiley. From Jo's musical epiphany (being carried over the crowd at a Clash concert) to when she became friends with John Peel at Glastonbury (over some very short shorts - his not hers) and interviewed Bono (surviving a power-cut on vodka); My World in Motion is an honest, funny, self-deprecating account of Jo's professional coming of age and what it means to be a private person in a very public world.

Incarceration can be a two-sided coin. For me, the long years of solitary confinement, with only soft padded walls to provide comfort, had induced a hazy detachment from humanity. I didn't ask for release, I merely sought refuge. They said I no longer needed their strictures. I wasn't so sure. As I shuffled away from the only home I'd known in 20 years, I did not know where next to turn. I saw a bookshop. It had seats. I had never seen a bookshop with chairs. I picked up a book. It was by Jo Whiley. I had never heard of Jo Whiley. Until now, the doctors only let me to read the Bible, Proust, Plato, Nietzshe, Wittgenstein and Roger Hargreaves. This was something else. Something new. Something fresh. Jo had something that my other authors could only aspire to. Her grasp of the 'now', the very essence of existence, held me spellbound as each page opened up a vista of new possibilities to me. When security were called to help me out of the store, I wept from all orifices at the cruelty of being parted from Jo's world.

That night, I drifted between shop windows, practising the look Jo taught me from her photographs. A look I had never before seen - projecting energy, wisdom and a superiority I could only imagine. I envied her many depths, her intoxicating wealth, her unassailable security of tenure and her saucy vixenish vogue. I dreamed that one day, I might be plucked from the many hundreds of thousands of the very best and most knowledgeable and articulate music fans to speak truth to power, to offer my insights to an adoring public, to instinctively KNOW when something was 'Really Amazing', 'Unbelievable'. 'Brilliant' or just 'Amazing'. I slept in the doorway of the bookshop. I had to finish the book. Small rodents became my friends.

It pains me to say this but this is the WORST audio book and biography I've ever listen too. It's like painful dull!
After listening to it fully....I dont feel I know anymore about Jo whiley than I did before.
I love Jo whiley and her show but you could learn more reading her Wiki page.
There is only a few tales in the full 3hrs CD.
Dont buy it if your a fan..

As the natural successor to John Peel, Jo Whiley has been instrumental in breaking many of todays top acts. Bands like Travis and Scouting For Girls owe their career to her and her canny knack of spotting true talent. This book traces her story from her humble beginnings living with her parents to her present position as "Queen Amazing of Radio 1." Along the way we hear about her having kids and going to Glastonbury.

Written in the first person you really feel like you're getting into Jo's head and seeing what makes her tick. It is a privilege to read.

If you're a listener to Radio 1, a fellow Whiley-maniac or simply a fan of great music played by great musicians then this is the book for you. As the great woman herself would say: "Amazing".

Love Jo on the radio, she has that unique quality of broadcaster/audience connection. Her book is an excellent read, with a very intimate look at her life with her sister. She is passionate about music and her family, and anyone who chooses REM's 'Crush with Eyeliner' and Elton's 'Tiny Dancer' as two of her favourite tracks has to be a thoroughly decent person.
