I have seen Thomas Ligotti praised highly for his work. This is the only one of his stories I have read, so I may be judging the whole body of his work unfairly based on this on collection. To my mind he should not be mentioned alongside H P Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe, he just (for me) does not reach the same heights of horror. What Ligotti presents here may have made an entertaining episode of 'Tales from the Crypt', but as a book I was unimpressed and unmoved. No scares, no emotional connection with any of the characters, and none of the uncomfortable otherness of the works of Lovecraft and Poe.
