Oukrainsky's personality really shines through in this insider glimpse of his two years working with Pavlova during the trying years of WWI. He was unusual in that he came from a wealthy family, yet went on to become a professional danseur after a very short period of training, danced on pointe in bare feet, and was compared with Nijinksy. His descriptions can be quite charming and insightful, but also highly opinionated. While he regards himself as an egalitarian, his aristocratic views and artistic assessments at times smack of elitism. Overall his story was intelligent, balanced and entirely believable. He praised Pavlova's artistry and criticized her childish jealousies and petty machinations. This book is also interesting in that it discusses his view of the merits of Diaghilev's Ballet Russes, which competed for the public attention against Pavlova's troupe. Also noteworthy are his comparisons of American cities and audiences with their European counterparts.
