Book Description

1 Nov 2013
On June 5, 2002, fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Smart, the daughter of a close-knit Mormon family, was taken from her home in the middle of the night by religious fanatic, Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. She was kept chained, dressed in disguise, repeatedly raped, and told she and her family would be killed if she tried to escape. After her rescue on March 12, 2003, she rejoined her family and worked to pick up the pieces of her life. Now for the first time, in her memoir, MY STORY, she tells of the constant fear she endured every hour, her courageous determination to maintain hope, and how she devised a plan to manipulate her captors and convinced them to return to Utah, where she was rescued minutes after arriving. Smart explains how her faith helped her stay sane in the midst of a nightmare and how she found the strength to confront her captors at their trial and see that justice was served. In the nine years after her rescue, Smart transformed from victim to advocate, travelling the country and working to educate, inspire and foster change. She has created a foundation to help prevent crimes against children and is a frequent public speaker. In 2012, she married Matthew Gilmour, whom she met doing mission work in Paris for her church, in a fairy tale wedding that made the cover of People magazine.

Really enjoyed this and the fact that the author doesn't do "tasteless details" about her ordeal improves the book. Recommend

4.0 out of 5 stars My story Elizabeth Smart 2 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Before I read this book,I read lots of reviews about it. Most of them were the same, great story great girl, but badly written book. I actually liked the way the book was written while at the same time I can see how it got the reviews.

I however enjoyed this book its a true account of elizabeth smarts story of a evil man and her strength to make it back home to her family while living like tramps on the street

5.0 out of 5 stars What an amazing girl (now woman) 26 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I don't know how to review this book, I don't think really anyone can. Elizabeth has shared her story with the world and I don't think anyone has any right to criticize it. You might not like what you read but you bought this book to hear her story.

I gave it 5 stars to say thank you for sharing your story, 5 stars for her bravery, 5 stars for her faith in God and 5 stars for moving on with her life, she is truly inspirational.

I am sickened by the people giving bad reviews, she is telling her story, it might not be going into the details you want to hear but you should be grateful she is sharing any of her story with the world at all. After all, she doesn't have to share anything with the world.

I was horrified to keep hearing in the book "people question" e.g. her sister not getting out of bed sooner and Elizabeth not speaking up in the library to the officer. How can people question any of it. Everyone acts differently in different situations and no one knows what they would do until they were in that situation. I think what disgusts me most with the people asking these questions is that Elizabeth and her sister were children and lived a sheltered life, how dare anyone be so rude.

Thank you again Elizabeth, May you continue to live a happy life!
