5.0 out of 5 stars China historical fiction at its best 2 April 2010
Format:Paperback
It is in the natural order of literature that famed authoress Anchee Min's (Pearl of China) significant other, Lloyd Lofthouse, is the latest author to join the ranks of China historical fiction writers with his highly-anticipated debut novel, My Splendid Concubine, which traces the true-life exploits of Sir Robert Hart.

Lofthouse's Hart is not the idol that encyclopedias portray him as; he is a flawed man. Enticed into purchasing his first concubine, boat-girl Ayaou, Hart is at once disgusted and stirred by the thought of "taking bids on her virginity," but admits to himself that "it bothered him more that he found the idea tempting."

Regardless of the novel's title, Ayaou is not Sir Robert Hart's "concubine." For all intents and purposes, she is stolen property liberated by Hart from a rival. Hart's true splendid concubine is in fact Ayaou's little sister. Only fourteen years old, the blossoming Shao-mei is admittedly even more desirable than Ayaou. "I'm not a finished woman, but I am a woman." She slid her hands down the length of her nude torso to her vulva..."

My Splendid Concubine is rife with the sexual dalliances of a white man adrift in China ("What a strange night, a strange place and strange girls"). Lofthouse also plaits his page-turning story with amusing cultural anecdotes that surely must have come from the author's personal observations of China ("Live here long enough, see crazy things").

5.0 out of 5 stars First Kindle book and did not disappoint. 23 Mar 2011

Not sure what made me by this one as my first book, whether my love of China or the review. A facinating read, a real mixture of fact and fiction bought together in a story that you wish would continue especially as it does leave things hanging a litte, but won't say anything about that as you will want to read until the end! The characters are believable and based on real people and events which makes some parts a touching read. If you enjoyed books such as The Last Empress or even Memoirs of a Geisha then this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read 2 July 2011

A story based on a less documented part of Robert Hart's life in China. It romps along with enough historical and cultural background to encourage me to find out more by using Kindle's search features. Ends with the feel that there could be another story to follow.

3.0 out of 5 stars Readable, raunchy fiction 17 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've given this book only three stars because, regrettably, the Kindle versiobn is marred by multiple proof-reading errors (more below). In addition, Lloyd Lofthouse describes finding, in a remote part of Shanghai, an old Red Guard archive on Robert Hart lisiting his vices and I expected the book to be at least documentary fiction.

It describes Robert Hart's early life (later he became the Inspector General of the Qing dynasty's Customs) and the split between his religious upbringing and his strong sexual needs. So far so good. I had always understood that he had purchased Ayaou, his concubine, in a local market, and I'm still not clear if the second concubine actually existed, based on the hidden Red Guard archive which he and Anchee Min researched. I would have welcomed clarification here.

The book is very readable, and Lofthouse's research into China is excellent; he achieves the rare feat of writing about sexuality, and the sexual act, in detail without vulgarity or prurience. He contrasts the relaxed chinese attitudes towards sex (later reversed after the Liberation in 1949, but that is another story) and the severe repressive nineteenth-centruy British ideal of monogamy and restraint carefully and amusingly.

One weakness is that Lofthouse is familiar with Chinese and American culture, but far less so with Britain. No naval officer would have used the word 'bloke', or, I suspect, even have played darts, which was regarded as an overwhelmingly working-class pastime. [Naval officers of the Empire regarded themselves as 'gentlemen'.] When the naval officers ask Hart and his companion 'Why don't you blokes join us in a game?
