Product Description

Review

'This is well-written, pacey and wonderfully atmospheric, but the USP here is the character of Gudmundsdottir. Wry, very funny and valiantly trying to balance the demands of her private life with her work - she is a joy. I'm looking forward to number three.' (Guardian 20080106)

'Sigurdardotittir delivers terrific clammy atmosphere and frequent frissons of fear; she is entitled to join the front rank of Nordic crime writers.’ (The Times 20080129)

'Both frightening and funny - a terrific trick if you can pull it off' (Observer 20071207)

'Distinguished by superb evocations of extraordinary landscapes and... rivetingly gruesome inventiveness' (Independent 20071222)

'Dark, rich and satisfying' (Woman & Home 20071222)

'Glacially chilling and dark as an arctic winter, this gripping Icelandic page-turner will keep you guessing all the way'

(Choice 20071222)

'An irresistible read. And very, very chilly inded' (City AM )

'Considering its population is only around 300,000, Iceland seems to have more than its fair share of good crime writers. Yrsa Sigurdardottir keeps up the standard... untypically, instead of the usual gloomy middle-aged man, her sleuth is a young woman... a personable heroine.' (Sunday Telegraph )

'Yrsa Sigurdardottir has arrived, fully formed, it seems, as something of a unique talent in the field... [She] matches Tess Gerritsen and Kathy Reichs in the bloodchiller stakes.' (Waterstone's Books Quarterly )

'Dark, deep and icy as an Icelandic fjord; this is a rich and rewarding debut novel of ancient mysteries and very modern murder.' (Mark Billingham on LAST RITUALS )

'Given the dark subject matter, this is a surprisingly funny book... a quirky and interesting read.' (Guardian on LAST RITUALS )

Iceland is fast becoming a hotbed of fine crime writing, and Sigurdardottir is at the front of the pack. This second novel builds on her already impressive reputation . . . brilliantly paced and expertly constructed.

(The Big Issue )

'A satisfying mix of mystery and pure madness.'

(Time Out )

Product Description

The child started crying harder, trying desperately to stifle her sobs. This wasn’t right. Why couldn’t God just come and get her now, if He was so good? Why did she have to go down into that dark pit? She was afraid of the dark, and this was a bad place – her mother had told her so. The girl looked at the man and knew she was going down there whether she wanted to or not.

A grisly murder is committed at a health resort situated in a recently renovated farmhouse, which turns out to be notorious for being haunted. Attorney Thora Gudmundsdottir is called upon by the owner of the resort - the prime suspect in the case - to represent him. Her investigations uncover some very disturbing occurrences at the farm decades earlier – things that have never before seen the light of day...

MY SOUL TO TAKE is a chilling, dark and witty crime novel, and a welcome return for Thora, the heroine of the highly-acclaimed LAST RITUALS.

'Yrsa Sigurdardottir has arrived, fully formed, it seems, as something of a unique talent in the field... [She] matches Tess Gerritsen and Kathy Reichs in the bloodchiller stakes.' Waterstone’s Books Quarterly (20090406)

5.0 out of 5 stars My Soul to Take--Yrsa Sigurdardottir, 24 April 2009
By Simon Clarke (Hackney London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: My Soul to Take (Paperback)
This is the author's second novel, and again features
the lawyer Thora Gudmundsdottir and her German 'boyfriend',Matthew.
Thora is acting for a wealthy man who has started a 'New Age'
health resort in rural Iceland, which he considers is haunted
by ghosts. When he becomes the suspect for the murder of his
female architect,Thora commences investigations, and begins to
unearth disturbing events from the past.
This is an enjoyable and engaging novel, but it is the characterisation of the likeable, sane and witty Thora ,that makes it stand out.

"My Soul's to Take"'s ingenious plot, moving so quickly that the improbabilities are ably concealed, is strengthened by excellent dialogue and some splendid jokes. An outstanding book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Read, 4 Aug 2009

My Soul to Take
I read this whilst on holiday in just two days. It was a complete page turner and I just simply couldn't put it down.
Icelandic customs/beliefs about ghosts is the start of this story, where the wealthy owner of the hotel/resort calls in his lawyer friend Thora Gudmundsdottir to help him solve some issues with the previous owners of the land, which then led to him being implicated in two gruesome murders.
The plot is simple but well laid out, the characters within the story are believable and help carry the plot, sometimes with humour. The description of the land and beliefs in Iceland are excellent and you find yourself engaging into the landscape as if you were there.

The only criticism was the ending, it sort of petered out, in not so much a fizzle but a small puff, but I would still reccomended it as a well worth read

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I'm sorry to say I though this way quite poor. Basically a formulaic Country House Murder Mystery, Cluedo-style, which happens to be set in Iceland. Read more
