Product Description

Product Description

"I watched the glaze of headlights, the windscreens of oncoming cars: a series of trapezoids with the silhouette of a single male driver. One pulled up in front of me; I reached over and opened the door, slid in. The smell of an unfamiliar car. A middle-aged man looking at me. 'Hi,' I said. 'How are you?' Kate Holden is accustomed to being summed up at a glance: arts graduate, history buff, middle-class daughter, dreamer, innocent. But she is a young woman who understands better than most the secrets that people keep hidden. "In My Skin" follows her journey from her reputation as a 'good girl' in the safe and leafy suburbs of Melbourne, to the all-consuming attractions of heroin and the sex industry. This is a story of survival and resourcefulness; an unflinching look at the consequences of addiction. Holden's journey leads her from a sheltered life in her loving family home to a world of sex for money - a seedy netherworld of back lanes, backseats and brothels. More than just a fearless and compelling narrative, "In My Skin" is a triumphant announcement of a major new literary talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, 23 Jan 2007

This review is from: In My Skin: A Memoir (Paperback)
This is not typically my type of book at all, but for some reason I picked it off the shelf in my local supermarket - it's the type of book that finds you when you're not really looking for it.

Kate's story centres around her descent into addiction and the social and real life repercussions. Her entire world is altered by her dependence on heroin, something I have never been close to having any empathy with - until now.

Kate Holden is a beautiful, intellectual writer, whose prose is effortless to read.

She doesn't come from a deprived background, no-one forced her to drugs, it just happens. By a series of seemingly arbitary steps.

The most amazing aspect to her story is her honesty, her courage to accept that these were her choices. She doesn't blame family, friends, or even the boyfriend that reluctantly introduced her to her first 'taste'.

I only started this book yesterday, and I'm already addicted and anticipating my next 'hit' tonight. :)

This was such a good read. It made sense and I felt for her. The way she writes gives such clear descriptions that you feel like your actually watching her. The descriptions about her addiction to heroin were brilliant. I loved it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, 20 Jan 2007

This review is from: In My Skin: A Memoir (Paperback)
This book made for a good read and was original in the way it took the taboo subject of drug addiction and prostitution and explored it. This biography of Kate Holden illustrates her fall from being a well educated graduate to a herion addict in a very matter of fact way. I did at times think this book was a bit repetitive and it is a bit too descriptive rather than focusing on her feelings and thoughts. However it is a worthwhile read that leaves you feeling relief when she finally overcomes this problem, in a bit of a quick and easy way, which I thought was a bit strange for someone with her level of addiction, and moves on to the life she always imagined herself having.
