Review

‘If you like Harry Potter and the Da Vinci Code, why are you even looking at this, you retard?’
Jimmy Carr

‘If you are suffocating in cosy Christmas cheer, this abrasively cynical, relentlessly misanthropic book might feel like a welcome faceful of ice-cold water straight out of the Clyde.’
The Sunday Times

‘Quite triumphantly, this is the most abusive, obscene, insulting memoir yet published…Many, many funny lines here. A difficult book to read sedately in public.’
The Evening Standard

‘He has a shocking, acid-tongued wit and his sharp observations make this one of the funniest autobiographies I’ve read.’
The Sun

‘an original mix of confession and stand-up monologue … it’s rather gratifying that it’s outselling most of the books by more famous figures.’
The Guardian

‘a refreshing antidote to the usual feelgood books by TV stars.’
The Independent

‘My Shit Life So Far, showcases that cruel and unusual comedy that's become Frankie’s trademark, and should probably be enjoyed far away from hot liquids… bizarre, intelligent and abusively hilarious.’
**** The List

‘frequently funny.’
Heat

‘biting wit.’
Independent on Sunday

‘Fans of Boyle's dark style will hope this book provides laughs-a-plenty and an antidote to the play-it-safe, sickly sweet autobiographies of other so-called celebrities. They will not be disappointed.’
Dave TV

‘Only read this book in public if you have no qualms about blowing coffee through your nose in spurts of guilty laughter … Punchier than a cage fighter, with more disclosures than an episode of Parky … Addictive and expertly brutal.’

If you don't know who Frankie Boyle is, you might find the title of this autobiography offensive. If you do know who he is, then you will realise that the title is likely to be one of the milder profanities you might encounter within the covers - and you'd be absolutely right! Frankie is a Glaswegian comedian renowned for pushing the limits of the acceptable until they fall over the edge into the nether-regions below, a place where many fear to go and find jaw-droppingly shocking.

However, being different from the usual crop of current comedians does set him aside, and often above them for ingenuity and putting a genuinely funny and unexpected slant on people, situations and sometimes bizarre extrapolations. He appears to inhabit a personal vacuum that isolates him from the taboos and expectations of society at large, but there is often stark truth in his pronouncements. Sometimes, however sacred the topic, speaking your mind and making fun of the often artificial niceties and conventions works well.

I was surprised (though in retrospect, perhaps not) to read of the heavy reliance on drugs that seems to permeate the book and his work - and his leisure time too, although how much is to be believed is probably simply another part of Frankie's joke persona. I found this to be an immensely enjoyable read, extremely funny at times, and a constant desire to see what might shock me next.

If you are easily offended, then step away from the book now...!

This is the funniest autobiography i've ever read. Bored of the same old, run of the mill celebrity drivel, i was hoping Frankie would deliver something different - which he has. Hilarious, rude and offensive, Frankie tells it like it is (even though we might not dare to say it). I bought this book this morning and read it in one sitting it's that entertaining. Just a word of advice - don't read it while eating or drinking. I exploded with laughter, covering my partner in a fine spray of beer. Enjoy.

Superb stuff 3 Oct 2009
By Steven Brown TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
I read 2 pages of the introduction when I saw it in a bookshop, and was laughing so much that I bought it there and then.

If you're a fan of his stand-up or Mock the Week, you'll definitely enjoy this - it's written in exactly the same style - crude, cutting, and very very funny.

In summary, a hilarious alternative to standard, boring celebrity biographies.
