5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for novice users, 6 Sep 2008
By Paul Nesfield (Berkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having stood in Waterstones looking for Mac OS X Tiger (10.4) books that will help my Mum use an upgraded iMac DV SE (i.e. an iMac from 2002 that I've installed the last supported Mac OS X, 10.4.11) I selected two: this one and Easy MAC OS X, V10.4 Tiger: See It Done, Do It Yourself (Que's Easy Series) .

Even though 'My New Mac' is based on using Mac OS X Leopard (10.5), this book was the better as it takes the reader through a series of activities broken down into simple, focused tutorials. For instance, the first activity is 'Basic training' and starts with a tutorial on turning the Mac on and off. This activity is covered in 74 pages and cover using the mouse, navigating windows and navigating folders, amongst others.
For someone that is completely new to computers this is a very gentle and structured way to get familiar with the Mac and computer skills: mouse, windows, menus etc.

My objective was to have suitable information, tuition and help for a novice user that wants to use a web browser and email, and connect [dial] to and from the Internet. I think that this and the colour 'See it done, do it yourself' guides are the best that are currently available for this type of user. Of course these books cover other areas too, but the essentials are there which, for me is, the main thing that many books fail to do.

I looked at the excellent Mac OS X: The Missing Manual, Tiger Ed: The Missing Manual: Tiger Edition (Missing Manual) and Mac OS X Bible Tiger (Bible (Wiley)) but thought that they were a step too far for someone completely new to computers.
