Amazon.co.uk Review

The fourth and final season of My Name Is Earl continues with the overriding idea of Jason Lee’s Earl going down his list of wrongs to right. It’s a simple concept for a show, as Earl tries to restore karma to his life, and it lends itself really well to the episodic format of a comedy show.

Season four of My Name Is Earl wisely gets things back on track after a bumpy-and-not-entirely-successful third series, and delivers many standout moments in the classic tradition of the show. It also fills in a few bits of back story, and the laugh count, while not quite up there with the show’s debut season, is nonetheless back near the programme’s peak. It goes without saying that the ensemble cast of characters, led by the terrific Jason Lee, are as fun to watch as always, and are set to be sadly missed now that the curtain has fallen on the show.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment with My Name Is Earl is that it doesn’t end particularly comfortably. There were clearly plans afoot for a fifth season, and that does mean that those looking for a finale with a nice big bow are in for a disappointment. Those, however, tempted by one last run for a very funny comedy series are far more likely to have their investment rewarded, though, and My Name Is Earl is set to be a show enjoyed on DVD for a long time to come. --Jon Foster

How ironic that a show based on karma could not get enough goodwill from the TV executives that made it for it to c
continue for another series. After a poor second half of Season 3, Season 4 gets back to what made the first 2 so funny. Namely Earl, Randy & the famous list. By season 4 Earl is back to doing what Earl does best - his list. With his dim but lovable little brother Randy by his side Earl attempts to cross off such bad deeds as "sold a guy a lemon car", "got the babysitter pregnant", "stole an RV" and "was mean to the old witch lady". On the way we also get to find out why Darnell (a.k.a. Crabman) was put into witness protection, Joy learns the sacrifices needed to be a good mother and Randy starts his own list after winning money on a lotto ticket and being knocked into by a bike. Some of this seasons episodes are the funniest yet & once again has a few famous faces such as Erik Estrada (formerly of Chips fame), David Arquette, Seth Green, Morgan Fairchild, Betty White and Danny Glover as Crabmans estranged father

The special features on this DVD boxset include about 15-20 deleted scenes, a 10 minute outtakes reel and a 30-odd minute segment called Earls Fanmail in which the cast and crew of the show answer the fans questions like "whats with Tim Stacks playing himself as an alcoholic?", "will Jason Lee's good friend Kevin Smith ever be on the show?" and "how many Joy hairpieces does Jaime Presley have on the show?" which while kinda funny at the same time runs a little long and is a little sad because it's obvious they're all thinking towards season 5 which we now know will never happen.

Its a travesty that they could have at least given Earl a chance to clear all of his list but it was not to be. And so it's with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Earl, Randy, Crabman,Joy Catalina & Company & to one of the bext comiedies since Friends & Scrubs. At least they go out with their heads held high. 5 Stars!!!
