Product Description

Review

Funny, poignant, interesting and charming. This is how life should be lived, (apart from where he nearly dies). (John O'Farrell )

All the qualities which make Arthur Smith such a success on the stage are here... by drawing out the comedy in humdrum reality he keeps one constantly smiling (The Scotsman )

The loveable old codger rolls out his memoirs, full of so-barking-they-must-be-true stories of his youth and stand-up career (Metro )

...witty, self-aware and poignant (The Observer )

...it radiates a glow of whimsy and invention (Independent on Sunday )

Book Description

The autobiography of one of Britain's best-loved alternative comedians

5.0 out of 5 stars Life affirming and completely brilliant 11 May 2009
By Lou
Format:Hardcover
A lovely book. Arthur is a fantastic writer and his story is both very funny and touchingly poignant. Whether you have previous knowledge of Arthur or not, there is much to be gained from reading this beautifully written memoir which is completely life affirming and a wonderful testament to him. I defy anyone to come away from it and not feel better about pretty much everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and warm piece of writing 14 May 2009
Format:Hardcover
Clichéd though it may be, this is such an easy book to read and so hard to put down. A rarity in that it is a "celebrity autobiography" in which the author beautifully describes the humanity of his life and experiences, rather than merely regurgitating a series of slightly salacious and dull anecdotes.

Having finished My Name is Daphne Fairfax, you can't help but feel that you know the author personally and, he is someone you actually like!

In his version of Hamlet, Arthur advised - before you speak, consider whether what you have to say is better than silence. A principal he has applied to writing this memoir and not a word is wasted.

Without doubt, the best biography I have read in a very long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grumpy old man with a heart of Gold .... 11 May 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book is an amazing read ! Who would have thought that beneath that gravelly and grumpy exterior was a tender touching and human writer with a sensitivity for detail and observation which makes this account of his first 50-something years a "page-turner" from beginning to end.

It will make you both laugh and cry (mercifully mainly the former), but the affection with which he sketches those around him is both touching and humbling. For an insight into the murky world of "alternative comedy", and mercifully few showbiz anecdotes - this is a must buy read for anyone interested in entertainment.
