The fifth album from New York’s Concetta Kirshner – aka sparingly-dressed alternative rap entrepreneur Princess Superstar – relies little on the candy-sweet hip-hop loops that characterised 2002’s Princess Superstar Is, opting instead to spend the duration in the dirty electro-disco that she visited on her recent collaboration with Disko B, the self-explanatory "F**k Me On The Dancefloor" – and, indeed, on her brief cameo on The Prodigy comeback Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned.

Thankfully, however, her flow – like a mischievous child prodigy rampaging her way to victory at the Junior School spelling bee, all excitable squeals and brain-bending wordiness – remains for the likes of "1000 Hits", where she keeps her eyes on the prize and pours scorn on her mainstream rivals: "You know who both won a Grammy?/Ace Of Bass and Milli Vanilli". Production spots from Madonna collaborator Les Rythmes Digitales and Felix Da Housecat – who contributes the Missy-esque "Coochie Coo", on which Ms Superstar declares her down-belows to be "better than sushi" – keep the quality generally high, but the best cameo comes on "My Machine", where our heroine goes head to head with an all-knowing robot, and somewhat surreally, gets transformed into a cereal box. One of THE best albums EVER

I seriously do not exagerate. I buy so much music that not that much gets me excited anymore but it's just the most intelligent and ingenious project I have ever heard.

It's a project album and basically the story is:

it's the year 3005 and everyone has their own clones called Duplicants. Princess Superstar breaks into the clone plant and makes loads of clones. each sets out to kill a celebrity until they are all dead and take their place, making Princess the only celebrity on the planet. But then the duplicants start to rebel and eventual go back in time and alter her genetic make up which causes her to lose her fame and become a fan of herself, and since her idol no longer exists she goes insane as she has noone to follow.

It is THE most ingenious thing ever created!

If you think this all sounds overly pretentious and the music must suffer as a result, then don't worry. It really, really works!

The musical style is a mingling of Hip-Hop, Rap (obviously) and many of you may be surprised to hear that it's incredibly electro based. Kinda like Peaches with the ability to rap and a better understanding of dance music.

In fairness, I don't think it's possible to write a review that can truly convey this album's ability to bury into your head, draw you into the plot and have you rapping along until your iPod runs out of battery and you run home to charge it.
I discovered this album two years ago, and when my computer crashed last year and deleted all my personal effects, unfortunately My Machine was a casualty.
Regardless even after about 6 months of not hearing it, this album still holds it's influence over me.
Not only has it literally got something for everyone (or if you're like me, everything for everyone) but it's also one of the best concept albums I've ever come across, I wont explain the story as so many other people have it would be pointless me doing so, but even with it oozing the pretensions it does, is no worse off for it. Proving that Princess Superstar is without a doubt not only talented but in possession of a great sense of humor, which she can effectively turn on herself and still come up smelling like roses.

While not as overly produced as the now irritatingly famous Perfect Exceeder remix by Mason, it still ranks much higher with me, due to it's originality and brilliant humor. Originally I was pleased to here the Exceeder remix as I hoped it may help bring princess superstar more so into the limelight (especially here in the UK). Unfortunately it now seems to have overshadowed her completely, which is a bitter shame.

Either way the simple fact that after months of silence this album is still gnawing away at my brain, is forcing me to buy it again, and I don't even feel bitter about it (just annoyed I can't listen to it in it's entirety this very second).

Princess Superstar, more enjoyable and addictive than smoking.

Can't find much to move you on the present comatose music scene? Princess Superstar works on a stratospheric level no one else can touch (leaving aside Faithless).

Don't be put off by comparisons with Gwen Sfefani or Christina Aguilera. This is no rambling r'n'b. The Princess is pure gutsy hiphop.

At least she was. But My Machine clashes hiphop head on with dance beats par excellence. Not since the great days of Blondie, T'Pau or The Avalanches has pop-dance had such an exhilarating outing. But it still works as intelligent fireside company.

The last album Princess Superstar Is is in the top ten greatest original pop albums ever, its subtlety and class outstripping everything else around. Only an artist of exceptional talent could follow up that successfully but Concetta has walked it.

At first listen the ambition has been scaled down. This album might be designed for fun. But after a few encounters the shear quality, invention, production finesse and verbal prowess comes shining through.

Only complaint is the bit pretentious concept. This leads to a few lesser tracks at the start but with 25 on offer there is plenty left that is pure gold.

Look out for the great contributions from Ashley Stevens. A progeny?
