small budget but gigantic film, 20 Aug 2004
This review is from: My Life Without Me [2003] [DVD] (DVD)
I saw this film a few nights ago and it is still with me. This sort of thing doesn't happen often. I cried like I would cry if a relative died, it really is that touching. Ann is 23 years old and has 2 little girls. She lives in a trailer in her mum's (played by Debra Harry) back yard. She is married to a man who loves both her and the girls, (the scenes in which they all get ready in the morning is especially lovely). She becomes diagnosed with cancer and has 2 months to live. She sets out to write a list of things to do before she dies. Sleep with another man is one of these, enter Mark Ruffalo. This film does not attempt to pull at your heart strings for the sake of it, what is tries to do is show the desperation and clarity one gets when they find out they are going to die. There are no rules anymore, no conduct of behaviour to follow, and this is portrayed with grace and wonder. I marvel at this film and now count it as one of my top 10.

Strange and beautiful, 26 May 2004
This review is from: My Life Without Me [2003] [DVD] (DVD)
This is the sad, simple story of Anne, a 23 year old woman married with thwo kids, living in a trailer with the first man she ever kissed. She tragically discovers she has advanced cancer and has 3 months to live. Instead of living life to the full she draws up a modest list of things such as recording messaged to her children, findong another woman for her husband and seeing her mother happy again. The most important thing she does however, is decide to make another man fall in love with her. This is, quite simply, the most uplifiting and beautiful film I have ever seen. Although the plot premise is distressing the film never strikes a morbid or sombre note. This isn't about the tragedy of death, it's about the beauty of life and is carried by a superb cast with Sarah Polley giving an Oscar calibre performance. You won't shed a tear on the outside, but if you're not moved and amazed by this spectacular film, there is something wrong with you. Buy this film and I can guarantee you won't regret it. You may even realise what the true value of life is.

Enchanting, 18 July 2004
This review is from: My Life Without Me [2003] [DVD] (DVD)
I had the pleasure of seeing this film at the London Film Festival with the director giving a shrot introduction to the film beforehand. I have to say, it is probably one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen, both in terms of visuals and performance. Although the subject matter could have made the film depressing, there is none of that in this film. Instead of a preoccupation with death, the film has an enormous appreciation of life. Sarah Polley gives a touching performance and Mark Ruffalo is amazing as the man Ann makes fall in love with her. In conclusion, heartbreaking but so worth it.
