Contrary to the previous reviewer's opinion, I found this film riveting - perhaps the pace of modern films has created a generation that simply do not appreciate the beauty of a dialogue based film over the all action blockbuster.
The acting is outstanding, particularly from Ronnie Barker, showing just how he could have been a great straight actor as well as a wonderful comic one ,Timothy Spall , despite a somewhat suspect accent, is terrific whilst Maggie Smith is quite stunning.
Unquestionably, however, the glorious scenery is the real star and the superb photography throughout does it full justice.
Overall, an excellent adaptation of the novella by William Trevor.

I don't know which film the previous writer watched, but this film is beautiful to watch, amazing to listen to and fascinating to become involved in. The sensitive way each character becomes dependent on the others and the unravelling of their life stories is absolutely brilliant.
Who can fault Maggie Smith and Ronnie Barker - set against the Italian countryside even more perfect.

Lovely filming, Maggie Smith at her best, heartwarming story with some dark flashbacks, great scenery (Italy). Watch it on a rainy Sunday afternoon with a glass of wine. Timothy Spall surprised with a good Irish accent. Not what we had expected and we enjoyed it very much. A light touch from the director and the best from the cast.

An interesting, but effective, choice of actor to work with Maggie. She, of course, was at her usual magnificent. And the Tuscan scenery is "spettacolare bello!".

Can't play it in Australia!
Probably something I should have checked but I can't play this DVD in Australia. I bought 2 others and 1 was OK but 2 of them aren't for Aussie DVD players. Damn!

Disappointing..
Was disappointed with this film- it was boring and couldn't get into it at all. Switched off before the end. The only Maggie Smith film I don't like.

Tuscan romances - house and people

An odd little film with a brilliant central performance
Not having read Two Lives: Reading Turgenev and My House in Umbria, the novel that this is based on, I expected an undemanding, pleasant, quiet, travelogue-ish sort of film here. Read more
