Review

"* 'Chelsea Handler is my new best friend - she writes like Judy Blume, if Judy Blume were into vodka, Ecstasy and sleeping with midgets and nineteen-year-olds. I laughed out loud and read parts to my husband, my best friend, and my Mom (which might have been a mistake). This book is no-holds-barred hilarious.' Jennifer Weiner * In a word: hilarious. In two:absolutely hilarious. These are some of the funniest stories I have ever read... Chelsea Handler has perfect pitch.' Laura Zigman" --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Book Description

A raucous and hilarious memoir of one woman's one-night stands, as told by cult US comedienne and extrovert, Chelsea Handler. Raunchy, acid and laugh-out-loud funny throughout... --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

I fell in love with Chelsea's quirky humour after I got her "Are you there vodka? It's me, Chelsea", which I read within a couple of days. I immediately ordered two other books by her, anticipating hours of hilarity. I took "My horizontal life" on board of the plane, thinking that I will indulge in it during my 7-hour flight. But this book proved just a tiny bit boring at times. Don't get me wrong, it is still good with laugh out loud moments, but it is Miss Handler's first published work and something is definitely missing (but she definitely got the missing part it in her subsequent books!) Some people here wrote that you can either love this book or hate it. I did not hate it, because you just cannot hate Chelsea's stories documenting her hilarious dating life and experiments with men, and for the first book, it's a fun little read. Surely, some people might find it a bit offensive, and if you do, there is a prude inside of you somewhere! Chelsea is never evil, which is what I really like about her. She is blatantly honest, somewhat rude, and very amusing. This is no Booker-prize winner, but an amusing little read. If you like how Chelsea's mind works, and/or one-night stand is something you've experienced yourself, this is a must have for you. Oh to hell with it, even if you've never had the notoriety to have one [one-night stand], get "My Horizontal Life" and live through a couple without actually meeting some of the weirdos that inhabit the bars nowadays.

((But for the great holiday read, I cannot recommend enough her second book.))

If you want a nice breezy read and a bit of a laugh, then this is a book for you.

Each chapter relates to the dating antics of Chelsea, a no-holds-barred laddette. She is as predatory as any bloke on the pull in the clubs and bars with no intention of long term committment. Booze, parties and one night stands rule.

Adventures includes a midget, an unfortunate 'oversized' fellow and an equally unfortunate 'undersized' fellow and she gives short shrift to both.

The story does not narrate any graphic sex scenes as it is more about her attitude to each and every encounter, which she relates with humour and candour. You do like Chelsea for all her dubious morals and outlook on life.

There are some really funny moments such as when she and her gay male friend are trying to show each other up at a party, and there are some gross-out moments such as the skid mark tale.

It does follow some kind of time line, but you can't be sure if it is one year or the next. She does eventually reach the age of 28 by the end of the book and you can only wish her well for the future.

Recommended as a light relief between the crime thrillers and serious novels.

A good fun read 2 Aug 2006

This is a good read with some laugh out loud moments. Its not really about sex. Its about realising you are going to have to make your excuses and ditch this guy because he is a loser. Its about the amount weirdos you can meet in bar. Its also about growning up and realising what once fun isnt anymore

Chelsea Handler is funny and frank, without being too vulgar, in this compilation of short stories about sex, relationships, family and more. I laughed a lot. A brilliant read!
