Review Among the 12 tracks here are reminders of her work in the 1950s and 60s, with three numbers sourced from the period when she was at her zenith. Listen out for the manner in which Day caresses the words of the meltingly beautiful song My One and Only Love, accompanied sympathetically by the Andr Previn Trio. Elsewhere, she brings a lifetime's experience to bear on Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries, and her version of Hurry, It's Lovely Up Here, a song from the musical On a Clear Day You Can See Forever - where the heroine, blessed with powers of extra sensory perception, discovers that she can make plants grow - is immediately lovable.
These titles are interspersed with the raison d'etre for this sort of release: a batch of previously unreleased titles. Four of them are co-written and produced by her late son, Terry Melcher. Sony don't reveal when they were recorded, but one of them, The Way I Dreamed It, was published in 1985 - meaning Day would likely have been in her 60s at the time of its recording. Her voice may have lost some of its lustre in the intervening years, but there's no doubting the sincerity of her interpretations.
Bringing us right up to date, Doris has recorded a short but moving tribute to Terry, who died in 2004 - she dedicates a favourite film song of hers, My Buddy, to him. Terry features on Happy Endings, his strong voice suggesting he could have enjoyed a successful recording career as a singer - a side to his talents which never really got going - on top of his achievements as a record producer (notably, he produced one of his mother's greatest hits, Move Over, Darling).
Four of the previously unreleased songs are written by Terry with Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys. The cheery Heaven Tonight exudes much of the pair's joie-de-vivre in its sunny arrangement, while My Heart is a particularly poignant piece; throughout, Day adapts her voice to the more contemporary song styles with effortless ease. She made a unique contribution to the 20th century through the era of the big bands, then movies and recordings. The warmth and charm of her artistry, which transcends the passage of time, live on in this thoughtfully compiled release.

Pure Gold from Doris Day,

How wonderful to hear some new recordings from the period 1985/1986when Doris was in her 60's but still had that magic touch in her voice when she sang. The selection taken I understand from her American TV series from that era, "Best Friends". It would be lovely to hear also some of the other songs featured from the series on another CD, maybe in the future. My favourite title from the album is "My Heart" although all the tracks are very listenable and to have the 8 tracks taken from the period of the 1980's digitally enhanced gives a real polish to the sound quality. I understand Doris wasn't happy with the original recordings from that period but what a joy that she decided to commission the release of this album in memory of her dear late son, Terry. A really lovely album!

Just Wonderful,

Fabulous to hear Doris Day singing at any time As a great fan of Alice Faye I understand Doris's agent when he said that "People could identify themselves with Alice and they can with Doris". This epitomises a chapter in her life to produce a beautifully emotional album. We all know of her persona and her supreme film career with memorable moments with co-stars (Sinatra, Cagney, Hudson, Garner) coming to mind easily. This compilation really needs no further introduction. Doris Day is a supreme artist. The songs are delivered in her own inimitable way. Vintage, yes, but old, no. Wonderful. A reminder of her vocal talent. Up there with the tops. 'You Are So Beautiful' and 'Disney Girls' tell it all.

An absolute must buy for anyone with even a passing interest in Doris Day,

As a younger fan of Doris Day I've always been bewildered by the amount of CDs out there which simply re-jig her old albums, to the point where it's difficult to know what to buy, in the end I bought the original albums on CD and a hits collection, and nowhere in my collection are most of these songs. Sure the odd one is out there but most are new to me and will be new to almost everyone out there.Doris Day is a legend and this is a fantastic insight into her latter years, when her voice was still amazing. Buy one for yourself and another for your mum, otherwise she's likely to borrow it! Doris starts off Happy Endings with a few words about her late son Terry, it's fantastic to hear her voice but it's a shame that she didn't duet with her son on Happy Endings, now that would be amazing. An absolute must buy for anyone with even a passing interest in Doris Day.
