We ordered this book as a teaching resource in our infant school, as part of a unit of work on St Lucia. The lively, colourful illustrations have proved to be the most valuable in supporting our work, as they have inspired paintings of landscapes and drawings of tropical fruits. Whilst the storyline is helpful in that it is told from a child's point of view we were unaware of the religious content prior to ordering. The story could be used in many ways, as a starting point for discussion about families, bereavement, special people and/or ecological issues.

Simply outstanding! 21 Dec. 2000

This is a truly unique and wonderful book for children (and adults). Besides the amazing paintings and accurate depiction of the beauty of St. Lucia, the book deals so gracefully with some pretty heavy topics: ecological dilemmas, religion, and the bonds of grandparents. We have what seems like thousands of children's literature in our house; I have two kids, 9 and 5. I am an elementary school teacher of thirteen years, and this really is my favorite kids book. A no-brainer for concientious parents.
Great for all ages 7 Jan. 2011

My Grandpa and the Sea is a short picture book, but it has enough meaning and emotion to be enjoyed by people of all ages. I use it at the start of the year to stimulate thought for writing in an eighth-grade class. In addition to having good character development and plot, it has excellent word choice and imagery, making it a book that my eighth graders can learn from in many ways. It is also a favorite of my own six-year-old and eleven-year-old girls as they love the language, story, and pictures. I highly recommend it for anyone who has children or grandchildren.
