Product Description

Review

Her lyrical entries, through the year she turned her tiny roof terrace into a garden, are a love song to the city as well as a celebration of the pleasure to be had from nurturing a seed to maturity. --Jodie Jones, Gardens Illustrated

This sweet book is a reflective account of a young professional living in London and her attempts to become an aerial gardener [...] she delights in her little patch of wild amidst the mayhem of London - and that is the book's greatest appeal. --Gemma Hall, BBC Wildlife Magazine

Book of the Week: This charming book is a love letter to the capital's hidden green spaces and their wildlife. --The Daily Mail, Weekend Magazine

Product Description

This book charts, over one year, her first steps with plants and the discoveries she makes along the way as she tussles with garden pests, watches falcons from the top of a skyscraper and beachcombs along the strand by the River Thames. As she draws a portrait of her secret green world high up above the urban sprawl, we become aware of the unique ecology of London and the immense web of life that its green spaces support.

Not knowing an awful lot about gardening, I was drawn to this book, and a city deweller it appealed to me, as I would like my garden to be practical, but also space is at a premium. Whilst not a 'technical' gardening book, (and neither does it pretend to be) I found this book very inspiring, as it really did show that someone with lots of enthusiasm and a little bit of dedication can grow things, even from seeds, and reap the benefits. as someone who hasn't been able to keep a cactus alive in the past, I am now determined to have another go!

I found the book well set out, as it moves through each month and season. it also has lovely whimsical illustrations, and beautiful flowing prose, that describes things so wonderfully that you could actually feel yourself there. I would recommend this book to any budding gardener who needs a bit of inspiration - my copy arrived on Sunday and I had finished reading it on the following Wednesday - I just couldn't put it down.

This book has been a lively companion on several train journeys into the capital, and transformed the destination from dirty grey wasteland into blossoming, fertile and loved. A hybrid of How-To-Do and What-I-Did, the book is full of hidden places, tales of mud and glory and helpful hints for the urban amateur. By turns inspiring, informative, amusing and ideological, it ably balances the twin aims of describing the wide-eyed wonder of a total novice with the insight and knowledge of a green fingered old hand. The beauty of a city being reclaimed by nature and of the secret gardens it hides resonates with a non-Londoner, and my Oxford adventures in my own square of green have been enlivened by what I've read. Great fun.
