A useful story 19 Feb 2010
By Poppy3
Format:Paperback
I bought this book for my 4 year old daughter who suffers from Selective Mutism. She will be starting school in September and so I am doing all I can to help her and to make her understand that other people also have SM and you get better at things (i.e. talking) as you get older. She loves this book. She loves that Daniel cannot speak in school (just like she can't in playschool) but that he can talk to his friend when they come to his home (again just like her). When I fist read it to her she was filled with emotion and kept the book in a special safe place. Once we relocated the book (!) we read it at least once a week. Her teacher to be is planning to read it in small groups to her class mates in September. Whilst it is about a selectively mute child, the theme of don't be mean to someone who is different is universal and so would work for other situtaions to.

A must for all parents of SM suffers aged 8 and under, and for all teachers teaching selectively mute or even shy children.

Great book for parents of SM kids to buy for their children, their friends and for the classroom. Our daughter loves the book, she knows shes not the only one with this condition, its definately made her classmates more understanding and empathetic towards her. Her teacher, speech therapist and phsycologist were also impressed with it.
