Review

Of 1st edition: Fortunately this book is not just another revision guide. I have never read a textbook with such intelligent potential. The intention is that you learn in many different ways and appreciate the information rather than just memorise it. The book uses several tools: historical vignettes, mnemonics, puzzles, poems, tables, and equations. They all reinforce the facts and - dare I say it - make all this arduous learning enjoyable. And that it is humorous and well written makes it all the more useful. --British Medical Journal

Product Description

My First MRCP Book has now set thousands of candidates on the right course not just for part 1 of the MRCP examination, but also for part 2 and PACES, utilising fun and easy ways to remember facts that will invariably prove useful whether students are puzzling over a tricky question or confronting the furrowed brow of a formidable PACES examiner. This second edition has been adjusted to reflect the new written examination, which is now a best of five format. While that may initially seem easier than the old format, the reality is that it can still be confusing when all five choices seem to be plausible answers. Knowing some basic facts will help students to tackle this situation with ease. To reflect the changes, three new authors have joined the ranks. Having recently (and eventually!) succeeded in passing the new format of the examination, the newbies have added questions on topics such as atrial fibrillation, tuberculosis, HIV and diabetes that, in their recent experience, reflect the changing emphasis of the examination. In addition, they have included a few images and ECGs, which will test your problem-solving abilities in addition to knowledge of the facts. Most importantly, we hope that this book will give pleasure, as much to the student as to the more qualified reader, and, whoever you are, we hope that you will enjoy your lessons. But remember don t leave your room smiling. Maintain the myth of the tortured youth.

There are, of course, 1001 MRCP Books out there. All, however, are 'Made of ticky-tacky and all look just the same"!
Not this one. This book is quite unique. All four authors have the MRCP, and seem to realise just what a tedious and joyless experience revision for it can be- especially when work is being done 'out of hours'. This book overcomes these problems. The sections are short, meaning that one can work for 5 minutes or 5 hours. Secondly, the chapters are broken down to relieve bordom, with quizzes and so forth lightening the load.
And what of the quizzes? Inspired! Here one learns by limerick, word search, conundrum...
The book is also rare in that it tries to be 'a complete course in not just what to know, but hgow to know it.'

This book will be a big seller. It will appeal to all doing MRCP. It ought, also, to appeal to students of medicine, and also to those (like me!) rusty after many years, but still asked to teach!

Making Medicine Fun 2 Jun 2003

Taking the MRCP exam is something many doctors will have to do. This book has all the right info you need to pass, however, it uniquely packages it so that learning is FUN and not the mind-numbing experience associated with most MRCP texts. In short, I would whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone going through this sometimes harrowing process, whether they be just starting out or about to take their PACES.

Plenty of detail to be going on with, but not a tome of minutiae. It's USP was the structure it creates allowing a logical work through any question - list of causes for finding A, list for finding B, cross reference and only one logical answer.

Certainly more useful to me than wading through pages of text, wondering whether any of it was going in.

Now to pass the exam...
