POP-UP THEATRE - WOW! 25 Aug 2009
By Mr. William Oxley TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
There is a little fairy story at the front of the book about 3 girls and a boy going to the fairy theatre; Petal, Poppy, Rose, and Acorn.

Following this is a page of press out fairies including the four from the story. Thankfully there is also a pouch to keep the press fairies safe in when you close the book up.

Last but not least is an amazing pop-up theatre that you can tie back so that it ends up being a 360 degree theatre world. What an ingenius idea and feat of engineering, you have to see it to believe it. Plus when you are finished it smoothly folds back into a book every time.

To tie it back it is probably best to emply 2 bull-dog clips, otherwise it can be a pain, especially for smaller fingers. The press fairies are a bit fragile and difficult to stand up on the scenery that is not entirely flat. In general this is not ideal for girls under 3 years old.

Very handy to pack on trips, keeps little girls occupied in their own fairy world, a unique present, and definitely worth it.

By joc66 TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This book/fairy theatre will undoubtedly appeal to small girls who all seem to have a thing about fairies/dancing/putting on a show, so Macmillan are probably on to a winner with this one.
It consists of a story at the front of the (hard backed) book (which relates to the actual theatre), then a page of press out shapes, of fairies and fairy bits and bobs, together with a pocket to keep them in (although you just know that their number will gradually diminish until you are left with none!).
You then get to the main event which is the amazing card engineering project which is the fairy theatre which you have to open quite carefully, and once you are ready to play, you can use the attached golden ribbon so that the theatre doesn't keep closing itself. The theatre itself is very detailed, with a trap door on the stage, a fairy flying from the ceiling and members of the audience watching the show. However, there is a lot more than just the auditorium - there is a separate section which is the entrance/foyer of the theatre where you can get tickets and sweet treats, and another section which shows the back-stage area - a seamstress working on costumes, a rehearsal area with piano, and much much more. If you decide to buy this, you will be amazed with the level of detail that has been achieved and way that this has been constructed out of card. I will add a couple of photos to give you some idea of what it looks like.
As is always the case with this sort of thing, you need to be fairly respectful of the fact that it is made of card. Having said that, my 3 children (3,5 and 7) have spent a long time playing with this today (and my 3 year old is a boy and not gentle and kept parking his cars in the foyer!) and it is still in very good condition. I wouldn't recommend this for 3 year old boys, (there are more suitable car parks!), but I would imagine that any little girl between about 4 and 8 would enjoying playing with this.

Amazingly Detailed! 22 Aug 2009
By Suzy Shipman VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
My 7 year old daughter has really enjoyed this book. In fact it's much more than just a book! From the outside it looks colourful and exciting and she was very keen to look inside. There is a story at the front, followed by a section which opens out into an amazing pop up area to play in.

My daughter found the story exciting, fun and "a bit funny", particularly at the end. She especially enjoyed the part where the Mr Marvellous, the Conjuror, is chasing his butterflies. The story seems to reflect well the reality of back stage in a theatre shortly before the show begins, albeit in a fairy way!

There are fairies and accessories to push out at the end of the story ready to play with in the pop out area at the end. These were quite easy for my daughter to push out, and the page was strong enough not to worry about tearing. We found it a little tricky to get the fairies to stand up, but with a bit of wiggling of the "standers" we managed it. There was a minor problem with one of the hats that seemed to be missing a slot to allow it to go on one of the fairies' heads, so we snipped out our own slot. We thought that the paint-pot page where you could store all the fairies and accessories was really useful so that all these bits wouldn't get lost. There was also a surprise in the paint pot of a mini theatre programme.

The pop out section at the back of the book is amazingly detailed. There are 3 sections - the stage, the backstage area, and the entrance area. It opens out and you tie the covers of the book together to make a full circle with access to each of the areas as you turn it round. There are many parts that can be moved or opened and some of the push out accessories fit into different slots. There's even a little door from the backstage area which goes under the stage, many little staircases going up and down, and a trapdoor with a little man popping out when you open it! My daughter loves playing with all the little fairies in here.

My daughter and I would definitely recommend this to other little girls of a similar age, especially if they are into fairies or putting on shows.
