Quality,
By LL (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Dancing Heart (Audio CD)
I saw this guy & his band supporting Seth Lakeman & was impressed enough to seek out the album. I wasn't disappointed. It's difficult to categorise the music. It has folky elements, but is not necessarily folk. It has a sound of its own. The lyrics are certainly unique. Blabbermouth has the unusual ability to write a genuinely moving ballad one minute & follow up with a cutting humorous & murderous gem the next. The first half of the album is ideal Sunday afternoon or drinking wine in the sun material. Opening track 'Something I Need' could easily be a commercial single. 'Chase My Dancing Heart' is another melody that hangs around in your head for days. On side two the humour & death come to the fore with 'Domestic Bliss' a tale of disposing of the wife to cash in the life insurance policy. 'Four Foot Death' sees the diminutive figure of doom turning up at the door to find he's not as scary as he thinks he is. 'Blabbermouth's Funeral' should be played at all funerals by law! All in all it's a quality album packed with great melodies. The vocals are always strong & there's some impressive banjo & guitar work. Well worth adding to any collection.

scrumptious tunes titillating lyrics,
This review is from: My Dancing Heart (Audio CD)
Blabbermouth is one of those rare singers who can truly sing. the vocals are open, honest, and just beautiful. and the music honours the songs. there's nothing that doesn't need to be there. guitar, banjo, organ, percussion... all do just enough to give the songs life. it's such a relief in this age of overdone showmanship. beautiful tunes, beautifully rendered.some songs are melancholy. sweet. this is a man who has a true, beautiful, light-filled voice. the sound of a heart telling you its own quirky truth with no frills, sheen or polish. in Amnesia, i didn't know a banjo could be so tender. someone once said that the universal is in the details. or maybe that's god who's in the details. this is a really private, intimate song. and because of that it does what the best songs do - it speaks for the listener. Amnesia is my song now. it tells my story, somehow. it's one of those songs that can save your life. some of the songs are funny. but not trite or petty funny. i mean hysterical did-he-just-say-that funny. the lyricist that is Blabbermouth is a mad genius. surreal notions of death and bizarre images that can work so well because, well, they must come from a place of truth. you can't try to be this funny and absurd - it has to be organic. self-consciously uncensored. brilliant. the tunes are lovely, the lyrics are titillating. if you like songs that tickle your thinking bone, you'll be in bliss in the land of the "Dancing Heart"

Anti-Folk?,
By
This review is from: My Dancing Heart (Audio CD)
Blabbermouths My Dancing Heart' CD is a treat to listen to. All the songs are quite different, but at the same time there seem to be a common link in there somewhere. Blabbermouth has his own style on these compositions -the type of mark that sets him apart from the rest. His voice is very distinct but the main attraction is the songs. Somewhere between these tunes lies comedy and nostalgia. A strange combination that works because of the track selection. Underneath it all is a human voice airing these emotions. The instrumentation is quite sparse, but the tunes and vocal melody come through clearly because of this. If this is anti-folk then it is all the better for it. If you like music that is meaningful and moving then buy this! I thoroughly recommend this album.
