Review

Nick Coffer, of the video blog MyDaddyCooks.com, and his son Archie whip up a storm in this 100-recipe book. It's not all cupcakes, either - the baked risotto and Mexican lasagne is dinner-party standard. (Independent)

I have never worked my way through a book like I have done with My Daddy Cooks! (Cathy Ranson, editor of netmums.com)

Nick Coffer's book My Daddy Cooks is full of what he calls "Tuesday night food" - lots of quick kitchen to table dishes which are nonetheless made from scratch - clever, simplified meals, with no reliance on anything processed. (Guardian)

Finally a collection of delicious and interesting recipes for all the family. Fantastic book, inspirational and easy to follow. Get your copy of this must-have book today. (Flying Start)

I'm a keen cook and as such I have many, many cookbooks strewn around my kitchen. However two things bug me about the cookbooks I've purchaed in the past, firstly it's rare to find a cookbook that contains recipes that the whole family can enjoy from my little toddler to grandpa and secondly, buying a cookbook is sometimes a leap of faith - will I find the ingredients? Am I capable of cooking the recipes? Do I actually want to cook from this book time and time again?

No such problems with Nick Coffers genius cookbook. I'm a follower of his blog so I was expecting good things from this book and I haven't been disappointed so far. All his recipes are written in a wonderfully easy to follow style and are prefaced with a little passage about the recipe and what it's all about. You can find all the ingredients in your local highstreet, there's no specialist equipment to purchase and all the recipes can be rustled up in no time at all. But by far the best thing about this cookbook is that at the end of the cooking process you end up with fresh, tasty, family friendly food.

There is also a big. big bonus with this cookbook - although I imagine adults will love cooking from it, the recipes are fabulous to do with your children! My daughter is 19 months old and already helps me prepare lunch, dinner and bake cakes. She has helped (just like Archie) in a few of the recipes now and loves to flick through the book whilst i'm cooking pointing out the pictures of Archie and the food.

If you buy only one cookbook this year, make it this one - you will not be disappointed, it will not languish on the shelf untouched, it will be used, battered and covered in food debris though!!

We love this book so much it has been used everyday since we bought it and hasn't even made it onto the kitchen shelf yet!

As a busy parent it is so easy to get stuck in a rut with family mealtimes, making the same few dishes over and over again. My Daddy Cooks is packed full of interesting but simple recipes, perfect for the whole family. There are also some of those great classics that we all love cooking, which have been given a My Daddy Cooks twist - the turbo-quick shepherd's pie was a huge hit in our house.

I was really pleased to find that I could make lots of the recipes from everyday ingredients that I usually have in the house. There is nothing more off-putting than finding you need special ingredients that aren't readily available in the local supermarket! This makes meal planning super quick and easy - I can often pick up the book at the last minute and find something tasty to cook straight away.

This is most definitely not a children's cook book, but a recipe book suitable for all the family - in fact, some of the dishes would be perfect served up to friend's at an informal dinner party. However, many of the recipes are perfect for little hands to help with and my children love helping mix up the batter for fruity popovers at the weekend. Having watched Nick and Archie cooking together regularly over on the My Daddy Cooks blog, my children insist on helping most of the time! I am always confident that the recipes will turn out well, knowing that they have been put to the test under rigorous circumstances by a busy parent, with a toddler, in a small kitchen - things most of us face when preparing family meals.

With a lovely layout and easy to follow recipes, I can see that this book is going to be a firm favourite in our household for a long time to come.

First things first, the colours in the book are really pleasing to the eye. There's a turquoise theme running through, cleverly accentuated in Nick and Archie's clothes, backgrounds and even crockery. It works really well, making it a pleasure to read.

And don't be fooled into thinking that because Nick cooks with Archie, his toddler, it means that the recipes are 'kids' food'. Not at all. The book is filled with really good, solid, family recipes with some innovative ideas sprinkled in for good measure. Take, for example, the Mexican Lasagne. Instead of pasta, the recipe uses tortillas: and yes, they really work! It doesn't even matter if you don't use every recipe exactly as it's written - simple layer up your own favourite chilli and follow the rest of the dish in the book - I think that's the beauty of a lot of these recipes: there are hints, tips and ideas that you'll adopt into your everyday cooking.

The (almost) no cooking required section will have busy parents everywhere sending Nick fan mail, and the pesto, although different ratios of ingredients than I normally use is - gasp - better and fresher than mine! I'll be using Nick's version from now on.

Tonight I shall be making the chicken and cauliflower biryani with my leftover roast chicken from yesterday, and this weekend I'll be going all-out and trying Nick's pared down version of a flourless chocolate cake (I do love it when my favourite recipes get even easier).

This book gets a very rare 10/10 from me.

I'm not so keen on buying cook books as most usually contain recipes that are difficult to follow or have lots of dishes/ingredients that I don't like. With Nick Coffer I have often dipped into his My Daddy Cooks blog for recipe ideas. They are always simple to make and very tasty. It's like he really is just one of us.

I have bought his book out of curiosity to see if there would be lots more good recipes of the kind I found on his blog and have been amazed at the selection, from Breakfast ideas to all-in-one pot dishes to No-cook dinners (my favourite as not only are there very few pots to wash up, our plates are licked clean after!!)to puds and desserts.

The book is beautifully laid out and very easy to follow. So far we've made the Baked sticky salmon, the turbo quick shepherds pie (which will be replacing the version I've made for the last 20 years!!) and very naughtily we indulged in delicious peanut butter and chocolate brownies (wow they are great). As with his other recipes, it doesn't matter if you don't have all the ingredients in precisely the right quantities, the food still works as he describes and is so tasty. But I bet that most of his ingredients are somewhere in your fridge / freezer / cupboard or on your weekly shopping list!

We don't have kids, but would recommend this book for anyone who wants to cook delicious, foolproof, quick, easy and healthy meals. My plan is to do a whole 'My Daddy Cooks' 3 course dinner party for our friends, so I can enjoy more time chatting with them, than in the kitchen (who knows if they stay over after, I could always impress them with oven baked French Toast the next morning!!)

Great Stuff
